hd dvd HD DVD picture format

whats the picture format they used for HD dvd ? for example blu ray uses AVC advanced video coding what is it they use on the HD DVDs ? and also are all HD dvds region free cause i was gonna buy one off of ebay cause they dont sale it here in the states but the seller said the disc is region 2 only and it was an HD dvd. the movie was terminator 2

All HD DVD's are region free. Can't help ya on the other question, sorry.

HD DVD and Blu-ray both utilize AVC/MPEG-4, MPEG-2, and VC-1 codecs. All HD DVDs are region free, so you can buy an import movie without wondering if it isn't.
