Default HD-A3 Audio output

hi, I just purchased a HD-A3 for a backup and have it hooked up to my onkyo TX-SR605 via HDMI. I cant get any of the HD DVDs to play in full surround sound. It sounds like its playing in 2.1 with sound coming from all the surround speakers (like dialog out of the back speakers which is usually for only surround effects). On the receiver it just says PCM and not Multi Channel like it should. The HD-A3 says its outputting DD True or 5.1. Is it something with the receiver? Anyone know whats up?

Is your firmware up-to-date? Do you get 5.1 over TOSLINK? (just as a test)

Is the audio output set to Digital Out HDMI?

Audio output is set to digital out HDMI. I didn't try the optical cable or check for firmware updates. I'm having other problems with the player to like freezing and not working properly. I'm thinking I am going to have to return this, especially because it was supposed to be an A30 anyways!!

Yeah for sure, but you'd also be surprised what a firmware update will fix and it is so easy on an HD DVD player. Plug it into your router and update with the remote. Easy as pie!

I've heard of something similar to your problem elsewhere where the person had their Onkyo receiver accidentally set for HDMI audio out to their TV as turned "on". The result for them was that it restricted audio to only 2 channels as it tried to match to the TV capabilities. Turning off this feature returned full surround for them.
