Default Toshiba Rocks - Stands Behind Its Products!

I have to say that I for one am very pleased with Toshiba's continuing commitment so far to keep us HD DVD owners up and running.

I recently called in to their customer service center to cry about playback problems with certain Paramount titles on my XA2.

In one phone call, I was told to pack up my unit, ship it back to their center in Tennessee and that I would be promptly shipped a BRAND NEW PLAYER at no charge, and...this is even after my warranty period expired!

So, I packed up the player, it's in transit to their warehouse and am told by others on AVS that they too in fact got brand new units shipped from a Toshiba Distribution Center in Cerritos Calif. without a problem..

Who could complain about that level of service..I get a brand new player, a new warranty, a new remote, free shipping back to me, all courtesy of Toshiba.

Also, I noticed the A1 firmware updates just being released..I own one of those as well..

Question..Would Sony be so kind in defeat?

I know not everyone has had a great experience with Toshiba, but so far I am impressed.

Man, so true...lame isn't it?

Blu ray certifiably is now just another fucking PS format period. I am so pissed I have to wait for the Panasonic player BD50 so I can finally stop using my PS3 thank you...But now I am more pissed Panasonic wants to sock to us with a ridiculous price!

yeah it's pretty pathetic.
I've been wondering what happened to Blurry and Spideybat, and a few other HD DVDers that used to post so much on here. I mean they just disappeared. pretty depressing.

Off topic but I agree! They were great, I miss them too - and Blurry was even a mod... maybe another mod around here knows where they went?

I've seen Spideybat on another forum so he's still around.

That's great of Toshiba. Was your XA2 new or a refurbed unit?
I'm starting to notice a reluctant eject on my XA-2 at the moment, once the tray came out about a 1/4 of an inch. So I closed it and it then opened fine. Anyone else noticed this? Is it just a case of regreasing the mechanism or a more worrying problem?

Great news about your hardware experience for sure! and Toshiba did give up too soon! Too bad Warner and Fox zigged instead of zagged.

The future is Blu and we continue to wait..... and wait and wait!! When is the Blu future going to be upon us?

Totally a brand new one. Not refurbished. New remote, etc. Brand new box..

Are you running v2.7 or v2.8?

Have to agree. Toshiba gave in way too early. The future is BLU, well they are talking about the future but what about now. I still have not decided which Blu-Ray Player to buy as none of them seem to play everything.

It's pretty hard to keep going when the biggest movie studio and the biggest worldwide retailer tell you they're not going to sell your products anymore!

True, but it goes a little beyond that IMO.
It wasn't just a "we aren't going to sell your product" it was a we are going to work to destroy your product. I think 1 of 3 things happened,
1.) Toshiba saw no way to gain a victory or coexisting and decided to cut bate (maybe salvaging China, but what is gained from that is anybody guess).
2.) Toshiba was told they the fix is in and the cartel was going to push Blu, and there was nothing that could be done. (Even if the antitrust laws were enforced it would be too late. )
3.) Toshiba's research, or data from some place, showed HDM was not the boon market it was thought to be and whatever was invested would not be returned no matter what.

I believe parts of the 2nd because it makes no sense that HD products were so unceremoniously pulled from stores like Best Buy and CC. Why would they do that when they knew the had sold customers players and were continuing to sell movies? Why no special sales like we are seeing in Canada and overseas?
This is where a fix being in makes more sense. No HD product on the shelves means no competition and an attempt to force consumers to only buy blu.

But after the NPD data, announcing very poor/bad blu sales, the 3rd option makes sense too. I am starting to think HDM packaged in Blu has already lost its chance, not because of competition, confusion, or fill in excuse here, but because of lack of interest on the publics part.

It is starting to look like the only way blu reigns supreme is if they completely pull DVDs' form the market. The studios don't have the grapes to do that, DVD makes them too much money. HD did have the stones to do that and the plan to. When it comes down to it studios don't care how we watch their movies as long as we pay them for it as many times as possible. If it comes down the line that it is better to scale down Blu and push DVD they'll do that as quickly as dropping blu to push digital downloads. The only reason HDM interested them is the possibility of profits from double-triple dipping, if that doesn't happen, they really don't care.

Back on topic Glad to see Toshiba at least went all out to support their customers even if they are quitters for whatever reason.

I wonder if they extend this to any used HD player? like form Ebay or the swapmeet.

I heard another story of a HD fan writing to Toshiba for a HD memento to put in his entertainment room and getting a sweet lighted display from them.

I have also had a very positive experience with Toshiba and hd dvd. I have nothing but positive things to say about them and my a-30. It has worked flawlessly. I am even planning on replacing my old tv with a new Toshiba Regza to compliment my a-30 down the road. As far as them giving up on hd dvd to soon I disagree. After the Warner pay-off it was like the dominoes started falling and there was nothing left to do. I really wished Microsoft had been more involved. They really have the money to have crushed blu-ray. I think they may end up being the biggest losers in the whole thing because they will probably have to include blu-ray in their next xbox. It would have been a lot better for them to have included hd dvd with hdi technolagy. I also feel Toshiba should have tried to convince Samsung and LG to make standalone players that way it didn't make them look like they were going it alone.
