Default 360 player and computer: How does this work??

Just picked up a couple of referbs for $20.00 each. The work fine with my 360, but I would like to use them with my Vista laptop and projector. What software to I need to make this work?? How can I even get the laptop to recognise the HD player?

My 360 HD DVD came with a install Disc.
When it was hooked up via USB to a Vista Desktop, Vista recognized the USB add on and asked to search for install driver online or a install Disc. I can remember which way it went, I installed it twice, I think I did it once with locate online and once with the disc. It showed a install process, then updated something and was ready to use. The computer recognized it as a XBox add on. Kind of neat.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you find referbs for $20?

Hmm. My laptop couldn't read the install disk. Maybe I'll try something else. Thanks, though.

Oh, I bought the add-ons from Consumerdepot.com, but they are apparently all out now. They have some A-30s for $85.00, though.

From what I understand, Vista has the drivers installed to find the xbox drive. You may have to find these online.

Step two are udf drivers in order to read hd dvd discs.

Step 3 is the software to play an hd dvd, which is powerdvd 6.5 and up. There was someting about a Japanese only version or something, but version 7.1 worked out of box. If you want to play an hd dvd disc you burned to the hard drive, don't update to 7.3 or beyond, as the functionality is gone.

Next, if you don't have an hdcp compliant monitor (projector on your part) you'll need AnyDVD which has a 21 day trial and will bypass this requirement.

Ripping to hard drive is a further step. Ok, that's what I can remember - cyberlink has an "adviser" software to tell you if you meet minimum requirements.

That install disk is for the Xbox 360.

Windows Vista is supposed to recognize the add-on and load the correct drivers for it.

This page has alot of useful info, but for XP:

You might also download the 21 day free trial of AnyDVD HD, it includes the drivers for XP, not sure about Vista:
http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html

And then of course you'll need playback software. The geniuses (or payoff whores) at Cyberlink removed HD DVD support from the most recent version of PowerDVD HD. ArcSoft Total Media Theater supports HD DVD and has a useful System Requirements page to see if your laptop has the necessary horsepower & hardware to support playback:

My PC doesn't have the processor and video card necessary to support high-def playback. But if I could find an add-on for $20, I'd still grab one for whenever I upgrade.

Actually, PowerDVD still has HD DVD support in the latest version, 7.3. The caveat is that you have to play the file from the XBox drive, and not from the hard drive. If you rip to the hard drive, then PowerDVD won't play that file. If you're able to pick up a PowerDVD disc of version 7.0, 7.1, or 7.2 on ebay, you will be able to play ripped evo files. But if you upgrade to 7.3, you won't have that option.

you can however use imgburn to make your ripped hddvd files into an ISO. Mount the ISO with daemon tools and PowerDVD 7.3 or WinDVD 9 latest versions will play it back no problem! PowerDVD 8 no longer has HD DVD support unless you find a hack.

At least with Isobuster (not freeware) + AnyDVD HD (not freeware) it's possible to extract all data from HD DVD directly to an ISO file on the hard disk without having to rebuild iso from files first. However, I only managed to play the ISO file with WinDVD 8 & 9 from hard disk but PowerDVD 7.3 crashed when I tried this.
