Default 1080i out put via Hdmi-Dvi

I this possible

I tried it and i was only able to get the following

480 i - no problem
720p - viewable, but a straight line and what looked to be the top portion of the video below
1080i - Horrible - would get "illegal source" - but set it to the "still" mode and got half the picture

This is funny, cause with my component cable i get 1080i no problem

I wanted to move to HDMI-dvi so i can upcovert dvd to 1080i

Monitor is a 42 inch Plazma
Nec PX42xm5g

I did a Goggle on your Nec PX42xm5g and got a lot of stuff in French and one guy in the U.K. who tired what you did and got the same "illegal source" message.

Do you still have your manual? I suspect the DVI connection is not HDCP compliant, and perhaps intended for a PC input.

My Sony HDTV has DVI and the manual says clearly that it is HDCP compliant & not intended for PC input, and works fine with my high-def players & Onkyo receiver's HDMI connections.

One alternative for upconverting via component - I read a post on AVSForums that if you start up your player, get to the Main Menu, turn your TV off or switch to another input, then press Play on your player. Wait until you see the counter go pass 10 seconds, then switch your TV on - it will have gone past the HDCP check and will play upconverted over the component.
