HD DVD addon for 360 looks horrible for upconverting

I can only get 480p, and the colour looks washed out.. could it be that I'm using component cables instead of HDMI? My 360 is an older model that doesn't have HDMI built in..

On my A3 they look absolutely gorgeous, but the 360 addon kinda sucks. anyone else notice this?

It's gonna suck on the Add On unless you're using HDMI or VGA for the 360. I had the Add On and had my 360 connected with VGA, and the upconversion was very good. You might want to try that.

I don't think I have VGA.. doesn't sound familiar to me. I always use component or HDMI

Even with HDMI, the 360 doesn't do a very good job at DVD upconverting in general. My A20 does a MUCH better job at upconversion than my 360 (both connected via HDMI @ 1080p). DVD playback on the 360 is noticably pixelated, whereas the A20 produces a much sharper image with more distinct edges. I pretty much stopped using the 360 as a DVD player and use the A20 instead.

I think thats what I'm gonna do as well.. just gonna use my A3, it does a wonderful job on the upconverting. Bye bye 360 addon!

no machine can upconvert anything over component cables because of copyright laws or some bullshit.

only hdmi and vga can upconvert

that madcatz hdmi conversion kit works, plug that into the back of the consoles and run the hdmi to a open hdmi slot. As long as your 360 is updated with the 1080p update a year ago it will work.

the only downside is you must turn on the tv first then the 360. its 60 bucks at gamestop or 80 at amazon. it comes with 3ft of hdmi and fiber optic.

no... it does not

the madcatz unit simply converts the component out to HDMI (why they didn't make it convert the VGA output i'll never know)

but it has been confirmed the madcatz hdmi conversion kit does not enable dvd upconversion

do a search on xbox.com forums and there are tons of threads about why the madcatz hdmi unit is worthless

i was considering the madcatz hadmi at one point tooo...then i read everything on xbox.com forums about it and decided it was a waste.

ur best bet is either vga or u can buy an arcade console (comes with hdmi) but keep ur hdd

now sell ur premium with the new controller and memory card the arcade console comes with

use ur old hdd with ur new arcade console and as long as u have a hdd u can download updates to play original xbox games

To answer your question bootylicious_krissy, no.

Are you referring to just standard DVDs or HD-DVDs? If it's HD-DVDs you should be able to get 1080i with your component cables. Make sure the setting are correct on the Xbox 360. The colors look about the same on my 360 and HD-DVD player. But I haven't done a side by side comparison though. I did do a side by side with my 360 and up-converting DVD player and both pictures looked the same. The sammy was even up-converting and the 360 was not due to no HDMI.

The 360 add-on is not actually doing the up-converting, it's the Xbox 360 itself. Granted you have to have HDMI or VGA to up-convert, due only to copyright protection. For some silly reason (more copy protection) you cannot display a 1080p image with component. But we all know we can display our games at 1080p, if the TV accepts 1080p over component.

I don't want to start an argument here. But HDMI/VGA/component cables are about equal when it comes to displaying an HD picture on your HDTV. This is true guys, lets not hijack this thread now. What matters most is obviously the source material, HDMI won't make a bad source look good and component won't make a good source look bad. Of course "deep color" may not work, but really what titles are using this currently new feature? Did you also notice people I said picture not audio

Do the DVDs look the same when the 360 plays them, in it's internal disc drive?

I forgot to mention the Toshiba A-35 I have completely blows my up-converting Sammy out of the water. I haven't done a side by side comparison for colors. But I did do one on movement and suffice to say the Toshiba was spot on, while the sammy was full of jaggies.

I think so, it feels like the addon doesn't upconvet at all.. so they should look the same.
