Its because its a Dolby TrueHD EX stream. The A35 cannot bitstream any Dolby TrueHD EX streams. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this issue in the future.

Usually you just look to see if it has a Dolby Digital Plus EX track then that will indicate that the Dolby TrueHD track includes the EX. Some others that I can think of are Lady in the Water and The Perfect Storm. Theres really not that many thankfully.

Does this affect the XA2 as well?

Coaler: no problems with Bourne Ultimatum (yet), but I haven't watched it all the way through. I basically popped it in to check out the PQ and special features. Does yours play at all or does it crap out part way through the movie?

It played the universal intro before the menu where it fades to the HD DVD logo. I was on AVS and some guys recommended "intializing" the player. So i did and reset all my settings how i want them again and now it seams to work. i haven't watched all the way through though but i got to the movie finally.

I'm not sure since I only have the A35, maybe someone else can verify who has one.

Add Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone & Chamber of Secrets to the TrueHD EX crowd.

I have a Toshiba HD-XA2 that bitstreams & I've played "Top Gun" Dolby TrueHD bitstreamed & it plays perfectly. I've also tried the DTS-ES track & the Dolby EX track & they play perfectly also.

I watched it all the way through with the Dolby TrueHD track with no problems. I just sampled the DTS-ES & Dolby EX tracks & had no problems.

I also watched Happy Feet with the Dolby TrueHD track bitstreamed & again played perfectly.

I had some problems with the HD-A35 & exchanged it for a HD-XA2 & downloaded the firmware update for it to bitstream & have had no problems with the HD-XA2.

It has no problem with the extra channels with DTS (such as 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio & regular DTS ES) just Dolby for some reason.

Top Gun is Dolby TrueHD 5.1

I pulled my copy out tonight & checked it. So is Happy Feet.

I tried all 3 soundtracks bitstreamed on my Toshiba HD-XA2 (Dolby TrueHD 5.1, Dolby Digital EX & DTS-ES) & they all bitstreamed fine to my Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH.

Is the HD-A35 having trouble bitstreaming the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack on Top Gun?

Yeah...it won't. It streams the DD+ track though. But when you select the TrueHD track on it or happy feet it just flashes trueHD on the receiver and there is no sound. I really hope they fix this in an update cuz the A-35 is only $250 and the XA2 is like $500

Do you use the Uni web enabled features? With the newer Universal releases (Bourne Ult., Eastern Promises, etc.), I've had to clear all the Universal web content out of my persistent memory to get them to play correctly on my A35. I think initializing clears out the memory as well.

That's a bummer about the A35 not bitstreaming any Dolby with EX. Hopefully a firmware update will fix it. I'm kind of wishing I had gone with the XA2 now. At the time I was thinking the Reon processor was the only difference, but the XA2 seems to be a better player in several aspects.

I agree Cochise. the more and more I keep seeing different threads it appears that the XA2 is better in many ways.
Luckily I have neither player (just 2 A2s), so I think I'm going to begin looking for an XA2 online.
