    Default Toshiba HD-A2 $198.00

I am an associate for WalMart and yesterday I did a RollBack for the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. It went from $298.00 to $198.00. The players should be available in store within the week as the layouts for electronics are changing as of 10/15. Just thought I give you folks a heads up.

Not sure if it was a new shipment or they just 'found' them in the back, but the one and only A2 sold at my Wal-Mart to some random guy. No Blu-ray players at all, no other HD DVD players, and no HD/BR movies, lol.

Remember, each Wal-Mart has to be taken as a YMMV in terms of deals. Sometimes corporate will change the price, and sometimes its up to the managers to clear inventory. The price was NOT marked anywhere on the shelves, I simply saw the A2 as I was walking into the department with $198 being rung up. Another Wal-Mart of mine has the Blu-ray BDP-300 for $366 on clearance while another has the same unit for $499.99. Its all up to the individual stores to set certain prices.

Now I work in a store in the woods of east Texas that usually doesnt receive higher end merchandise. I find the two different item numbers kind of odd. The numbers are cross referenced so the onhands/orders/units sold will always be the same. But usually two numbers are cross referenced if they the same basic item with a different model number or some sort of "free" offer with one of them.

Another observation: I am receiving 3 tonight with 14 more on order for my store. Some promo is obviously coming down the pipe since this item is not on my new modular update for DVD players due this week.

My Wal-mart only has an RCA HDDVD Player for $298. I did think about trying it out since it has 5.1 analog outputs. But I'll wait. The a2 is fine for now, I'll be getting the new 3rd gen soon enough.

I think buying an outdated 1080i player isn't the best of moves with the holiday shopping season right around the corner. 1080p sets will be hitting that range and they won't be last years models either.

Please not this tired old argument. The HD-A2 is a fantastic player. Most 1080p sets will de-interlace and the HD-A2 will wind up giveing you 1080p anyway. Not that 99% of the people will even be able to tell the difference btwn 1080i and 1080p in the first place.
    Blu-rays: 350
    Steel Books: 15
    Players: PS3 Slim, Samsung BD-P1500
    Sound: Onkyo TX-SR674S / SKS-HT240
    TV: 65" plasma, TC-P65V10

When you can get the A30 for about 150 more on Amazon... and that gets me 2 HD movies? I honestly don't consider the A2 a possibility at all.

Full 1080p and actual True HD support? Win.

No, it's HDMI 1.2 - it doesn't send a THD signal, just a PCM signal.

My TV is 1080i, so it made perfect sense to me to save $100+ and get the A2.

    Default outdated...

Someone said they wouldn't buy that outdated player (A2). It is nice to have new things but if you have recently bought a 1080i television, it will be a while before you buy a new one unless you have the exta money laying around. It isn't outdated if it fits your needs better than the upgraded version. That is just being smart. If outdated players was so bad then no one would buy any standalone blu ray player after october 31st. There are not any 1.1 players to my knowledge except maybe the ps3. If those people just want to have a movie playback then Blu ray is a good choice for them.
