    Default XBOX 360 HDDVD Question

I am able to decode 6.1 DTS ES tracks through the HD-DVD Addon when I am watching a regular DVD. But not when I watch an HD-DVD. Anyone know if this is normal or am I doing something wrong?

    I wonder what is better....

Getting a standalone HDDVD and using the Analog Outputs to get TrueHD to my sound system.

    OR

Using the 360 and transcoding all tracks DD+, DD, DTS, TrueHD to DTS 1.5 mb

In one case I am sending the audio via analog cables to my reciever and possibly introducing some artificial noise and on the other hand I get TrueHD tracks down-rezed to DTS 1.5....

The first. Getting the standalone is better than the 360 add on.

Plus, you get 9 free movies with it Always a plus, thats a 270 dollar value, and the good players that you want, 399 or 499 are worth it.. free movies can't be beat ^_^

    Crypter,

This is an issue I've long had on my mind, and has left me dreaming of the impossible...getting analog 5.1 out of the 360. I find the DTS output to be quite sufficent considering how many HD DVDs don't support any audio codec over 1.5 mbps. But support for hi-res audio seems to be increasing, and the 360 is absurdly loud...so it may be worth it to buy the stand alone.

I got rid of my add on, and just bought the Toshiba A-30 on Monday for a few reasons. One, my 360 was getting serviced (just came back today), and I don't want to rely on my 360 to be able to watch hd dvd movies..... and 2) The 360 is amazingly loud and the sound isn't very good to begin with, so it could be tough hearing dialogue.

Yes the Elite is signifigantly more quiet than the 360, which will actually overpower the sound field during low volume scenes...for '300' not a big deal, for 'Blades of Glory' kinda obnoxious. I use a Nyko cooler pack with the 360, which makes it even louder sadly.

I'd recommend you stop using that Nyco pack ASAP. It's been known to burn the inside of the 360 because the souirce of power it uses to cool the 360.

Take the cooler pack off, and see if your 360 is brownish in that area now.

How's the A-30? I've had my eye on one since the press release, but haven't pulled the trigger.

Yeah, I was real concerned about this when I bought it and check often, but I haven't seen any brown. Honestly, my 360 isn't heavily used and the Nyko keeps the unit near cool to the touch. But I'll be livid if the thing bricks the 360...so I'm a bit torn

So far so good.....i did have one problem for a sec though when I was watching Children of Men, the audio was out of sync and started to sound distorted. I paused it and played again, problem gone. I watched a few others since then to test it and the problem has not resurfaced, so it may have just been the disk.

That dvd was trouble from the damn start..

The elite does run quieter, a lot in fact compared to the premium. The newer models will also run quieter, I strongly recommend getting a stand alone though. But if you choose the add on, always make sure theres no disc in the 360 system, take it out before you watch the movie, or else the system will run terribly loud..
