Default Acer Joins HD DVD Promotional Group

Although reports from last week's IFA tradefair appeared to indicate that Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer favored Blu-ray of HD DVD, a new press release puts them squarely in the dual-format camp.

When Acer announced last week that it had joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, it was widely assumed that the world's No. 4 PC vendor was now squarely in the Blu-ray corner.

Today, however, in a just-issued press release, the notebook giant says it has officially joined the HD DVD Promotional Group, as well. The release goes on to remind that Acer is no stranger to the HD DVD camp, having already released a line of HD DVD-enabled notebook PCs here in the US.

"Acer is pleased to join the North American HD DVD Promotional Group to help bring the freshest technology to more consumers worldwide," said Campbell Kan, Vice President, Mobile Computing Business Unit, Acer Inc. "We are confident that our comprehensive HD DVD notebook offers will meet consumers' demand and expectation for true high definition experience. I look forward to further promoting the merit of HD DVD, in close collaboration with the Group."

Thumbs up Great news. Welcome to the group.

This is great news. This posting is not on the Bluray.com page because it kind of blew up in there faces. They thought they had gained something over HD-DVD last week in Germany, but it turns out, they gained nothing.

Great to see HD-DVD ROM drives spreading to people on laptops. That shouldn't cost more to the consumer, at least, not as much as a BD drive would.

Great stuff.

It's obviously a lie. It's shameless what Acer will do to make HD-DVD people feel good about themselves.

Or indeed what blu-ray fans do to make themselves feel better.

Don't take it out on me! It's okay to cry once in a while. It doesn't make you any less of a man. Come on... let it out.

guys guys guys, ACER has always been wishy-washy on choosing a format, they have delivered promises for both formats from day 1...Notice that ACER is joining the North American section of HDDVD, I thought HDDVD was a world wide board like BDA...

Look at the BDA announcement below which indicates its joining BDA efforts world wide

"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced today that Acer Inc. will become the newest member of the BDA, joining more than 170 of the world’s leading consumer electronic, computer companies and content providers. Acer is one of the three largest personal-computer brands in the world and the number one notebook brand in Europe.
"

According to the HDDVD news, they only proclaim to be joining the North American HDDVD group, since when has HDDVD become segregated....possibly a sign of weakness...who knows.

What's with all the negative tone? I thought this was an HD DVD hardware discussion section.

Anyways, it's not any extra cost to them. They are just joining the group. Acer, from the article, seems to have released HD DVD drives on their computer even a while ago. So why would it cost Toshiba anything?

Who cares? At least these HDDVD drives are removable and can be replaced with a BD ROM.

True. I guess it works the other way as well by removing the BD ROM and replacing it with HD DVD drives on Sony computers.

I'm very confused by this setup...

Video: Samsung 720p 32" LCD ($799)
Audio: Altec Lansing VS3251 70watt 5.1 Sound System ($47)
HD DVD Player: HD-A20 ($300 + 3 combo HD DVD + 5 HD DVD)

Whats with the PC speakers?

Oh. Haha. My TV is in my computer/game room and I didn't want to pay for anything expensive for audio.
