Default Star Trek:the Original Series-season 1

Amazon.co.uk has this for an incredibly low price.Just keep in mind that the standard def side is most likely in the PAL format. The HD DVD side is obviously region free.which is what's relevant.I would normally gobble a whole bunch of these at this price and sell it on Ebay but the casing is just too flimsy to take a chance on.so here you go...

Not bad.

After shipping cost and subtraction of VAT it comes to around $48 USD.

Pretty much matches the best price that's been seen on the set.

Yep sold out now and #4 dvd seller on Amazon UK. Not bad for dead format.
(probably why Amazon US will not have a major HD DVD sale any time soon. Too many opportunity for bad Blu press, see the "Consumers Shun Blu-ray Players" @ information week as an example)

I don't know who would buy 1/3 of a series that will never be completed in the same format. Maybe I'm a little too anal, but having 1 hd-dvd set and 2 blu-ray sets would irritate me. I'll wait for the blu-ray versions to hit the shelves. I'm in no hurry.

At the original list price of $149.99 I completely agree. At the deal I got, $25 new from Future Shop I disagree with you. Also, with the dismal sales this release had I think you may be waiting quite a while for the Blu versions.
Doesn't bother me any more that having seasons 1 and 2 of Lost on DVD and season 3 on Blu.

Just my opinion.

Jay

Unfortunately for Trek fans, there's no guarantee for the other two seasons to even get Blu releases. Apparently Toshiba was paying for most of the restoration by Paramount, and when HD-DVD went under so did that subsidy, obviously. Last I heard Season 2 is still scheduled to be a DVD-only release.

Hopefully my info is wrong but that's what I've read.

Season 2 is definitely a DVD-only release at this time, and Toshiba had subsidized somewhere between 10 and 20 million dollars of the work on Season 1 to bring it to HD-DVD. It is highly questionable if Season 1 will make it to Blu-ray any time soon... let alone Seasons 2 or 3.

In other words, for people holding off on buying Season 1 on HD-DVD/DVD combo because they want all 3 to be in the same format, what you're likely to end up with is all 3 on DVD. You could unfortunately be waiting a very long time to get all of these in high-def. I was on the fence for a while about Season 1, but now that I own it I'm very happy I pulled the trigger. For $50 you really can't go wrong if you enjoy this sort of thing.

Couldn't agree more, for the price you can't go wrong and if you want to think of it this way you could consider the HD DVD as a DVD set and buy the other two restored seasons for the complete set of TOS.

I'm not a big Trek fan, as you all can probably tell , but the complete package of HD DVD put together is really impressive. Although I do wish I could have gotten the UK edition, I just prefer Pal video over NTSC, although that doesn't matter when the HD version is on the other side of the disc.

I still a bit mad at Toshiba for cutting and running like they did, we would of had TOS season 2 &3, as well as numerous other hits on HD from this years movie line up.

i hope they at least got a concession for DVD 2.0 or CHDVD

PS It seems that Toshiba was really heavily subsidizing TOS, the rumor last year that it would have ever come to Blu were way wrong. And dosen't look too hopeful unless Blu really takes off, and will probably be delayed until such a time that number of Blu players warrant the release 2-3 years from now (if everything goes perfectly and all the consumer surveys are full of it ).

I doubt we'll have to wait very long for these on blu-ray. The only reason we're not seeing Season 2 on blu-ray right away is because they scrapped Season 2 on HD DVD and didn't have time to get the blu-ray version ready. No reason to think star trek is any different than any other movie studios put out. Paramount doesn't need help from sony to release their other titles.

TOS hd dvd sold 100k becasue it was a combo format, not possible with blu and the install base is no where near what it needs to be to make TOS a success. You'll have noticed that none of the the other "A" list movies are being rushed out, why, because the current install base won't buy enough to make it worth while.

TOS Season 2 is out tomorrow, this was plenty of time to rush out a blu edition if they had been so inclined , they (CBS) are not.
Apparently Toshiba was very instrumental in the restoration work and prep for home release. Hell there might even be a contract clause that prohibits CBS from releasing it on Blu.

Blu-ray installation base is growing daily and is far bigger than what HD DVD was when TOS 1 HD DVD came out.

You're also forgetting that CBS is airing these new remastered episodes. If they're already going to spend the money to re-master and do the special effects you can be it'll be out on blu-ray.

There are plenty of HD DVD's that haven't been announced on blu-ray. It's only a matter of time. NO need to read into it any more than any other movie. There is no reason to assume putting this show on blu-ray would be any more cost prohibitive that any other tv show or any other movie we see popping up on blu-ray.

So you are saying Toshiba did not play a part in the restoration?
In that case Paramount would just continue on with Season 2 for blu-ray, instead of not having any time to get the blu-ray version ready because HD DVD was scrapped. I do not see the logic behind that.

Correct if I am wrong but as far as I know only current or near current TV shows that were filmed with HD in mind have gotten released on HD-DVD or Blu-ray. As for cost, ST had one hour shows times all the episodes in a season would be a lot of more hours to restore then a single movie, not to mention ST was done with 4:3 in mind and for Season 1 new footage was done for space shots and even more harder Matte painting were redone with people moving around in front of them. Thats a lot work.

Messin18 is trivializing the effort and money that went into the HD-DVD version of TOS Season 1. It will be years, at least 3-4 but probably more like 7 or 10+, before TOS is revisited yet again. Only then will we get a blu-ray or some other high-def treatment.
