Default 360 Elite/HD DVD Add On/7 HD DVD Movies = 599 @ Amazon

Good price? I saw this on the front page of Amazon today ... they are selling the Elite + the HD DVD Add On + 7 HD DVD Movies (King Kong and 300 in the box, the other 5 from the Toshiba mail in offer) for $599. For those of you that don't know, this deal is made sweeter by the fact that the Elite supports HDMI which means full 1080P for folks that purchase this package.

promo details

edit: The more I think about it the more I am wondering if this represents a big salvo from Microsoft aimed directly at Sony, the PS3 and the Blu Ray format in general? There are rumours that have come out that the 80 Gig PS3 has been spotted in the US retailing at $599. I wonder if this is MS's answer ... and possibly represents a new committment from MS to take a more active role in the format war?

You can always get a vinyl skin for the addon on Ebay for like $10 bucks. I ordered one for a friend and it actually looks really good once its applied.

Really nice deal for newcomers who wants to get into a high definition format. 360 games are phenomenal too, I've probably dropped a month's pay on 360 titles since picking up the console in October...

I would be all over that is i didn't have my 360 already. Heck if sony would do that i would have to seriously look at finally getting a ps3. I still think the Wi is going to be my next one though.

nice... my buddy is looking for a 360 after comparing ps3 and xbox 360... i am even a good supporter by showing him forza 2's realalitsics compared to gran turismo hd cocept... and i also showed him the fast and the furious tokyo drift on hd dvd (of corse i didn't forget to show him what u control is)... he definatly wants a game system that actually has games with it and a format that has all the really cool features on a lot of his favorite movies... lol "blu-ray fanboys watch out... jack of levittown pa is going hd-dvd before blu-ray"

Yeah thats a good deal.
Isn't it 7 free HD DVDs which make it a MSRP up to $210?

Nope, he had it right - 5 free offer + 300 from amazon + King Kong in the box.
King Kong is essentially free, but if you want to include that too, tack on another $25.

I have been thinking of getting a 360 for my home theatre room (I have one in the family room) and this does not look like a bad deal. The thing is I have both 300 and King Kong and most of the titles on the free movie list, so it is of less value because of that. Still considering it, though...
