Default Attention Sony Fanboys: Digital downloads to your Blu-ray player

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/09...ivx-certified/

Quote:
DivX announced Sony Pictures Television will be offering "high quality, secure" content for download-to-own to DivX Certified hardware (like the PlayStation 3 or DSM-330, but definitely not the Xbox 360). Little details like who will actually sell this content, what shows will be available (our fingers are crossed for syndicated Jeopardy HD episodes) and when aren't mentioned, but this is another step as it promotes itself as a platform for legitimate content distribution.

Update: We contacted DivX and confirmed the Xbox 360 is not a Divx Certified device and will not play this content, while DivX Connected devices like the DSM-330 will.
For those who say you need huge bandwidth pipelines and 50GB downloads, know that Divx-HD file sizes are about half of WMVHD, at least from a comparison dated July 2006 (I couldn't find any recent data):

But when you consider DivX-HD's 5X faster encode time and its approximately 50% smaller file size vs. WMV-HD, the format starts to look more attractive!
Godspeed, PS3 owners. Do your part; help usher out the era of physical media.

I find it odd that the PS3 is divx certified and the x-box 360 isn't considering the 360 meets all requirements for certification and as far as I know the PS3 does not... Maybe I'm wrong about this, but how can the PS3 be certified when as far as I know, it's not compatible (officially) with all required versions (specifically version 3.xwhatever) and officially limits playback to 2GB files.

The 360 suffers from neither of these limitations and seems to play all of my DIVX conent flawlessly.

Yeah, I could have sworn the Xbox 360 could do DivX VOD, but then I realized it was my Oppo DV981-HD where I saw that...

The Xbox 360 video FAQ says:

Quote:
Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.

So maybe there's a problem with Divx DRM...dunno. I'm going to see if I can try to stream some DivX VOD later tonight.
