How many iTunes or MP3 can you back-up on CDR or DVDR if you have to back-up you system?
How many HD movies can you back-up with out Blu-ray?
I can see now hand me that stack of 100 DVDR's so I can back-up my 16 to 18 movies.

HD downloads the format for you if you never had a worm or had to reformat your hard-drive or upgrade your operational system.

"Discs Will Never Die!" this reminds me of the time my friend said "There's no way anyone would ever be able to fill a 32 MB harddrive"

I think digital downloads will kill blockbuster and netflix but I can't see how it will take over for people that purchase movies to keep...

Well netflix at least has movie downloads available and determine video quality based on your bandwith (if i remember correctly).

It will kill off blockbuster. They are already in trouble without mass adoption of digital downloads. They are loosing the mail order rental business as well.

Blu ray might be replaced in the future with devises like some form of SD card cards that i am sure will become even cheaper to produce or even a smaller optical disc.....even a disc the size of a umd device (just not umd. The key will be smaller media....

Netflix said over a year ago that the mail distribution of movies is not in their future business plan.

I think Video downloads might one day take over the video viewing experience. But consumers 'consume' music and video very differently. Music is normally in the background. You take it with you on your trip, on the bus, on the plane, the train. You usually sit down to watch your movies in your house or go to the cinema. You stop everything else you are doing to watch movies. People still plan when to watch a movie because it demands your complete attention.

High Def is pretty much useless for small screen sizes, which make portability not so much of an issue. Most people will be watching their HD movies at home. You can listen to HD audio anywhere (almost) but you need a huge screen to watch HD movies, which limits it to your home, or if you are a movie star/rock star/insanely rich individual and you have a big HD TV in your car.

Much as HD movies will include HD audio, that is nearly useless without the visual spectacle. There is a reason why people still go to the cinemas.

And the infrastructure is not ready, although that could change. But to give some perspective, I have a 8Mbps connecion to the internet and that is probably as fast as 80% of people in the UK can go (BT ADSL). It is not enough for Hi def, even if I could max it out. The infrastructure in not adequate, so on demand HD is not viable.

I do not want, or need HD movies on my iPod, (or anything less than 32 inches actually).
