No, it's not. It works exactly the same way, it just requires more bandwidth.

The difference between music and movie is that the music is now used in mp3-players or the computer is the jukebox.

A pc will never replace the tv.

I for one WANT physical discs. Files are too shaky and not very nice to look at.

People are too caught up in this whole "DD must = PC + internet" mentality. Everyone, say it with me... computers are everywhere. That nice PS3, guess what it's a computer. A Toshiba HD-A3 player... yep, a computer. A TiVo box... yep, that's a computer too!

The reality is many people already have a "computer" connected to their TV, not counting the obvious HTPCs. And the cable or satellite connection going into their tuner provides a lot of bandwidth to download on.

As far as files being "shaky"... it's called RAID or making backups. Taking the proper measures means pure electronic data is much less prone to damage or loss than physical media. That's a fact. Plus you don't have to go hunting for discs.

Again: The luxury of non-physical music is that I can take it with me in my mp3...Why would I want to do that with a movie? High Def on a 2x3 cm window and a free stiff neck at the end of the movie...NO FREAKIN'WAY!

Hunting for discs is one the reasons I am a collector...

Along your lines of thought, gifting is also important. How many people got a movie for their last birthday or holiday? I know gift cards are big but what you you rather get, a movie that you really wanted that you can open up and throw in your player immediately to watch, or a gift card for a download service?

    Discs WILL die.

I have no doubt about that. But, it's going to take so damn long for it to actually happen that such a conversation simply has no place on this forum. I am here to talk about there here and now and near future of film content delivery, not something that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I know some HD-DVD fans are bitter...but it's getting old. (not a slam on the OP...but all those other dumbass threads).

Im curious as to how would all this downloadable service be provided. Who would control it all? Sounds to me like everyone would be trying to secure exclusive movies and such to their own services. Everyone is trying to get a little piece of the pie. Sounds to complex to become a reality anytime soon if at all. I mean I am sure it will have become in 10 years but even then I still see physical media existing.

Even if you take into account if you buy a movie, you can't bring it over a friend's to watch. You can only watch it in your damn house!!!

Maybe it will be like Apple with AppleTV, ipod, and Macs, but what? Am I suppose to stay with a certain brand?

None of you are asking any questions. You all continue to talk talk talk with your heads in the clouds.

I don't want to imagin people watching a movie when they are driving, but music is onother thing. I still have Cd's. I think downloads will live side by side disc. Radio is still around and video didn't kill it off, but it did kill the radio (STAR). Actually most HD TV's can be used as computer monitors.

So then ... it's different than downloading a 60MB CD.

It could be a whole other format war all over again.

Allthough, Vudu has them all so far and I think so does everyone else. Hopefully, the studios won't pick sides this time around.

That Vudu box is pretty cool though. Might have to buy one to try it out. It only does DD+ for audio but video is up to 1080p.

If I could rent a HD movie for $5 and it was the same quality as a BD or HD DVD, I would very rarely buy HDM again.

That is the problem itself. There is not set standard how all this content is going to be downloaded. Since that is the case you have to pick what you want it on and after you start buying movies on one then a better one comes out or something then your screwed, even by brand. You can't move your itunes library anywhere. The same will go in this situation. What if you exceed your capacity, your just going to buy harddrive after harddrive? There is too many crazy questions!

The Vudu is not much different than AppleTV. Your going to have all these players available and everyone is going to be like "What to buy?" Hell I see blu-ray staying strong just because its safer because I can take it to a friend's house, put it in my laptop, and my blu-ray player with NO problem. I am going to have the this damn thing right by my blu-ray player and at least it can play my dvds!

There's just something about having the case and artwork on the DVD that adds to the experience. I know a lot of people like this too, they proudly display their collections like they're works of art. I don't think downloads are going to make a dent really, not for a decade or so.
we are in total agreement. I occurred to me one day how long it had been since I actually placed a cd in a player hit play and listened to it. I have a bout 200+ gigs of music (compared to some of my friends this is a small collection lol) and I just dont listen to cds...so I sold my collection.
Could this occur with movies....I guess. But for it to take place for me I would have to have already built a digi collection. Just to make a decent ripped collection of my SD movies would take up an insane amount of HDD space....I cant even fathom how much space even my modest HDM collection would take up.

and dont get me started on the idea of streaming taking over...ugh that makes me just cringe.

i came into this thread ready to argue about all the things that will be replacing discs, such as solidstate drives. i couldnt even get halfway through the list though because the topic is "Discs will NEVER die" and the first few points are regarding things whose lifespan are obviously constrained by a matter of time

Discs WILL die eventually. I guarantee you that
