I made the mistake of paying almost $1000 for one of the first computer DVD recorders and honestly it was a pretty big waste of money.
I had used it maybe 5 times in the first year that I had it and pretty soon they could be had for $200 (and then even cheaper). The main reason I didn't use my DVD recorder so much was a lack of any good authoring tools. I would expect the same to be true for both these new formats with very little software available for them. At this point blank BD and HD DVD media are way too expensive (more expensive than blank DVDs ever were) If you want the drive for backing up data you'd probably be better off buying a 1TB hard drive for half the price. If you want the drive for burning movies to watch on your PS3 then it's pretty much useless with the cost of media being so high. I guess you could download a torrent of the HD DVD of Serenity and burn it to Blu-ray but at the price and time it would take to author it, it seems more of a hastle than it's worth.

I planning on building yet another machine - Core 2 duo or Quad core with 8800GTS in Shuttle case and a Blu-Ray burner. I may but this drive on my primary machine instead - a dual Xeon 5160 Workstation.
I have questions about this drive. How well do the drivers works and have you try the it with Nero 7 Ultra Enhanced and did it work. Can you do increment backups to the disks. Also does the rewritable disks have the same dust protection on the disk as movies. How well does it Play Blu-Ray movies on the disk. I am hoping by this summer time that these drive come down to half its price. The media will come down in price one day - remember DVD drives and media when they first came out.

I agree tranzparentl. This is one for the early adopters only. I didn't buy a DVD burner until way down the road as I found CD burning to be perfectly adequate. Even nowadays I don't use the DVD burner much. I certainly could use a drive like this but only when they come down in price (along with the media!)

Where does the Blu-Ray burner fit into these forums. It really not a stand aloine unit and not a game console. I guess once they get lower price and more popular, we will have a new section here.
By the way, I configured a system on Newegg that has this drive and quad core Intel cpu which goes down in price in april. It was quite awesome system with 8800GTS on it - but it $3100. I hope by summer time it will be about $2300 or so

This forum caters for BD Hardware so it seems to fit the bill, whether player or recorder?

In reality PS3 is also BD Hardware - but I can completely understand having a seperate forum - especially with attitudes on the Internet. Back to the subject of the recorder, I am curious which Blu-Ray media supports write files to disk more than one session. IE I would like place some files on the disk and later adds some one. Also which supports deleting previous data on disk.

I would assume BR-W would do what you want it to do, just like DVD-RW of right now.
As far as it goes, this Blu-ray recorder is more of a toy for now but in the Spring, with the Quad Core Xenon Mac Pro's hit out, i will be adding this inside of the unit as I already edit in HD on my Mac and have Blu-ray software to burn with. Granted as time goes by, like anything, faster burn speeds and cheaper prices will immerse

How is this meant to be slotted into your PC bay - the edges seem slanted?

I thought the same thing too when I saw that. I'm just assuming it's an off-angled photo shot.
