Why widescreen computer monitors are 16 x 10 instead of 16 x 9

The last date someone posted in this thread was exactly ten months ago to the day.

How far back did you have to go to find this and why?

This is the HD Content Production part of the forum.... a nearly dead area. It only has 2 pages and not too many posts.... it's very possible that this was on the first page, only a few posts from the bottom.

As to the 'why'.... that I'm not so sure.
