Default This is seriously overlooked advantage of HD DVD

I have been learning about HD authoring and the authoring tools available. An important advantage HD DVD has over Blu-Ray is the ability to burn HD content to a standard DVD-R and be able to play it in high def on existing HD DVD players. I have been recording OTA HD programming onto my PC for a while now using the ATI tools that came with my ATSC TV tuner card. For now I have just been transcoding them down to DVD quality for playback. I am looking at Ulead Studio 11 plus and Pinnacle Studio 11 plus as a new authoring tool to burn HD content. Both claim to be able to burn HD content to standard DVDs. I think the capacity is 20 minutes for single layer and 40 minutes for dual layer.

This ability to use standard DVD media could be important for people with HD camcorders who would like to play their home videos without firing up the camcorder each time. IMHO a 20 minute home movie is long enough. At 29 cents each for blanks this is very cost effective.

not to rain on your parade, but BD movies can be authored and burned on DVD9 media, too.
i've authored straight-play 30-min. videos using (the buggy) Encore CS3 and Scenarist. both played fine.

for both HD formats, all you need to do is watch out for the bitrate because the dvd media spin rate is lower than High-Def disc. encoding video above 20mbps for dvd disc can have playback issues (stuttering, freezing, etc).

The authoring tools I have been looking into tout their ability to burn HD content to DVDs. Of course they also support Blu-Ray authoring, they just don't mention whether Blu-Ray HD can be burnt to DV9 media.

Sonic Scenarist is priced out of my league. $2600 Yikes! BD only too.

Adobe Premier Pro CS3 $769.99 Ouch!

"'important advantage'"? ...where did you get that info? ....any link to prove it?.

it was wrong information you posted, i corrected it so that others here will not be saying the same thing because it's really embarrassing.
all of a sudden, you got yourself into mentioning software prices just to divert attention away from your misinformation.

oh well, enjoy your Ulead and ...."Pinnical" ??

    goodbye.

True but hd dvd support and potential for creating high def content on standard dvd's is fully supported in the spec better and more reliable. All hd dvd players support it but not all BD players.

In addition the potential for HD recordings using standard dvd disks is better.

    Records High-Def to DVD

As first reported in English by CDRinfo, Toshiba's RD-X7 would not be the first high-def recorder to support DVD - Sony has a handful of Blu-ray recorders planned for this holiday season. But it would be the first to support a new file format adopted just three weeks ago by the DVD Forum, caretaker of the HD DVD format, called "HD Rec."

Based on preliminary information, Toshiba is probably achieving that two-hour span of 1080p red-laser recording using dual-layer capacity DVD-Rs (8.5 GB), not single-layer (4.7 GB). Still, it's a head-turning feature that could take advantage of some latent similarities between DVD and HD DVD mechanisms that Blu-ray consoles cannot exploit.
    HD DVD's 3X DVD introduced

In the ongoing format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray still holds the most studio support by far, but HD DVD is holding its affordable advantage. Now HD DVD is offering another way for consumers to move to high definition video called 3X DVD. Doug Carson & Associates (DCA), which produces DVD Mastering software, said that the first 3X DVD-ROM was officially mastered over the weekend.

3X DVD is like HD DVD on DVD discs; it uses actual red laser-based DVD discs, just with high definition content, UDF 2.5 file structure and AACS copy protection. Video content would be available at 720p in VC-1 or H.264/AVC to fit the maximum capacity that DVD discs offer while maintaining superb quality. Of course, 3X DVD's will not work with regular DVD players.
Consumers will likely never see these advantages without widespread adoption.

Blu-ray players like PS3 can play m2t files direct from DVD-5 or DVD-9. No authoring or any sort required. Just need to burn the files onto the DVD. If using PS3, the m2t files can also be played through:
    - HDD on PS3
    - storage from USB ports
    - flash memory cards
    - streaming from media servers
