Canon recently came out with the HR10 DVD camcorder that I am interested on getting. It boast of 1920x1080 High Definition video capture in a 3 inch DVD disk.
Now I wanted to know what type of a player I need to playback the High Def recordings (don't know if Canon is part of the blu-ray group os the response was interesting to me). Excerpt of my email below: ---------------- Dear Mr. xxxxxxx: Thank you for contacting Canon product support regarding the HR10 DVD camcorder. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. I apologize for the confusion regarding your inquiry. AVCHD uses an MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video codec. The compressed audio and video data are encapsulated in an MPEG-2 Transport stream, called HDMV. This stream format and most of the structure of AVCHD are derived from the Blu-ray Disc BDMV format. Consequently, AVCHD recordings can be played without modification in most set-top Blu-ray Disc players, such as the Sony BDP-S1, Panasonic DMP-BD10, and the PlayStation 3. We hope this information is helpful to you. For further assistance, please call our Canon Pre-Sales Department at 1(800) 828-4040 between 8:00 am and midnight ET, seven days a week. The Pre-Sales agents can assist you with product information and dealer locations. Thank you for choosing Canon. Sincerely, Chris Technical Support Representative Special Note: Certain issues are very difficult to resolve via email. If your question remains unanswered after you have received this email, you may call our special toll-free number for email customers with unresolved issues and speak to a technician by dialing 1-866-261-9362, Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 midnight ET, and Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET (excluding holidays). Original Message Follows: ------------------------- The MODEL I'm referring to is the HR10 which uses a 3 inch DVD disk instead of a miniDV tape. So what I want to know is what player do I need to see high def recordings on the disk, a BLU-RAY or an HD DVD player? So the model again is the HR10.<http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...elInfoAct&fcat egoryid=177&modelid=15264> ![]()

Blu-ray players will read the AVCHD coded which is what the HD content is written on, however (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) I do not think the PS3 is capable of playing a 3" disc... These discs will also play in some PC's through the DVD drive if you have the proper software... You best option would be to find one in a store, record on the disc, and see if it plays in your model Blu-ray player... I have not seen an actual list of which players support these...

You might want to give the disc a spin on an HD DVD player as well, the AVCHD format used would likely play on those too (if the player reads the file structure and such of course).
To play on your PS3, you can probably just drag the files off the mini DVD and burn them right onto a standard DVD. |

And as far as I know, Nero can also burn a Blu-Ray image, but I think you'd need to use an actual BD disk w/ a BD burner.

the PS3 WILL PLAY your 3 inch disc from your camcorder recorded in Hi Def, but be sure to FINALIZE the disc before putting it into your PS3, it slowly takes it in just as it does the regular discs, i am using a sony HDR UX1 AVCHD camcorder and in hi def the pix is unbelievable, especially using a hi def projection system and it is much nicer to go from camcorder to playback right away bypassing the computer, |
