Default Help a stupid person understand aspect ratio

Ok so as i understand it, aspect ratio is the ratio of the height and width of a video signal. i have a question, if you have a 1080p signal with a wider than normal aspect ratio, idk 2:40 or something, how can it still be considered 1080p? it wouldnt be 1080p resolution right? because it has a wider aspect ratio. unless im getting really confused which i am anyway lol.

The black bars count. 2.4 gives around 800 lines of actual picture.

The black bars are encoded as part of the picture. Including black bars, every disc has a resolution of 1920x1080.

On a movie with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the active movie image uses approximately 1920x800 of those pixels.
