Default Went to the Dark Side...

Well, I got my player eariler than I thought. My wife was going to get me a laptop for our 10 year anniversary, and I found a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ348E/B on sale at CC. drive, full HD according to the specs, and an HDMI output so I can hook it up to the TV currently.

I'll get a SA player eventually, but this now allows me to keep up with HDM. I purchased Casino Royale and the first Pirates. On the laptop they look amazing. Going to hook it up to the TV tonight and test it out.

To those who are on the fence about going , it doesn't hurt. It actually feels kind of cool knowing that I'll still get new HDM releases. I love my movies, but, and I hate to sound like the fucking commercials, the future is .

I played with one of those at my job at BB. Only thing that messed with me was the region coding. I had to go into the preferences for WinDVD and set it manually.

Wonder how it will transmit audio.

Picture on the TV, once I messed around with the settings, was crystal clear. Sound was very good, but, as my receiver does not have HDMI inputs, I can ony judge what I heard through the TV converter through the optical cable, and it sounded very good.

One of the points I had been hedging on with either HDM format was portability. Now, with the laptop, that is no longer an issue.

Many discs are also coming with a "digital copy" option as well for those of you with Blu-ray drives. I would love to have this option but I don't have a computer with a Blu-ray drive.

Most digital copy movies that I own have the digital copy on a separate DVD, not the blu-ray itself.

I have a question. I assume your laptop's screen resolution is under 1080P (most are). Assuming that's the case, you're not limited to that resolution when you output the signal over HDMI are you? For example, suppose your laptop's resolution is 1680x1050, if you have a 1080P TV will it display it at a true 1080P? Or will your receiver/TV upscale the 1050 signal into 1080? I agree it's not a huge deal at this resolution, but it might be quite noticeable at lower resolutions if there's scaling involved.

Every BD-capable video card (laptop or desktop) has an option to change the rez, either on the output or on the primary screen.

The laptop is Full HD, 1080p. My TV, however, is 720p. So, unfortunately, I can't answer that.

I realize you can change the resolution, I can on my existing laptop, but typically you can't set the resolution higher than the LCD screen can support -- unless things have changed for those bd-enabled laptops. So, my laptop's native resolution is 1280x720 or something. I can't set 1920x1080.

Shouldn't ALL digital copies be on a DVD since majority of computer owners do not have a BD drive in their computer?

Untrue, sir. My Macbook Pro runs at 1680x1050 on its own screen, but drives my projector just fine at 1920x1080. It'll also run a 30" monitor from the external DVI port (at 2560x1600).

You probably just need a new driver.

Every one I have seen so far is on a separate DVD.

Sony announced digital copy from PS3 to PSP from the Blu-ray disc, but that has not actually appeared yet. They haven't said when it will appear.

OK. Perhaps I just do need a new driver. Good to know. Thanks. Sorry for hijacking your thread too OP.
