Today is the dat that Amazon starts charging sales sax.

First my discount went down to 5% (last I checked) and now another 8 1/4%
That will add 13 1/4% to all my orders.

Well...I'm going to Wal-Mart today so I guess I might as well for for V for Vendetta while I'm there. I highly doubt I'll be renewing my prime membership come October. Don't get me wrong, Amazon will still have the best selection and more than likely the best prices for me even with tax but I'll certainly be more prone to comparing prices now. Before I pretty much bought everything from Amazon except maybe 1 J&R sale (taxed as well) and a few from Wal-Mart.

Such a sad day. *insert crying smiley that HDD lacks*

I think I'm going to boycott them, I shouldn't though because I have Prime membership. I hate government shit, to hell with it all. They only use the tax dollars to do stupid ass shit with it, nothing life changing. If I knew about this tax shit sooner I would've placed my order Friday like I had planned to in the first place.

Wrong. They are merely collecting it. They don't keep it. And it is a tax you have been legally obligated to pay all along ... but since you didn't, and no one else did either, NY has put the burden on Amazon to collect and pay it for you. Costing them time and resources they never should have had to spend. And inevitably forcing them to raise their prices a little bit everywhere to compensate for the added workload. Yay.

No. NY state passed a bill which when into effect yesterday requiering all online retailers to collect NY state tax due to everyone not claiming their out of state purchases. The government gets enough of my money as it is being single (not married anyways) and with no kids.

The real reason is due to Amazon's affiliate presence in the state of NY. Not all online retailers need to collect the tax. NY changes the game, by stating that because these retailers have partners with a physical presence, they must now collect tax as though they had one. Overstock.com and three others have ceased all business relationships with affiliates in NY to circumvent the need to collect the tax from NY buyers. If Amazon followed suit, they too wouldn't have to collect the tax.

I now use another online retailer with competitive pricing, no tax and free shipping for my BD purchases. All future Amazon purchases are on-hold until further notice.

This year, while doing my VA state taxes, was the first year I noticed the state requesting you claim and pay sales tax on online goods, over the amount of, say, $250. I probably fall into this category, but I can never remember, so of course I didn't bother. I can definitely understand why states would try and do this. Whether or not I think it's right or fair: I haven't thought enough about it to say.

Michigan was speaking of an online tax late last year (same time they were talking about a "service tax") thank god it didn't make it all the way through the system. The way we can fix all the tax issues is legalize Marijuana and then tax it like they do Alcohol & Tobacco. Then you would make $$$ from taxes, spend less on enforcing laws against Marijuana, and stop spending money on prosecuting and incarcerating those guilty of possession & dealing.
