http://www.wetanz.com/holics/index.p...5&catid=2#more

(it comes after the q19)

QUESTION
Will the Ring trilogy get a blu-ray release around the time of Hobbit? or sooner?
Peter Jackson
Hi Icaroz - We are working on a blu ray version of the LOTR trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won't be this year

so, not this year but it's coming

I bet they release the theatrical versions next year and the extended versions in time for the hobbit. I hope I'm wrong.

I kinda hope they'll do a version w/ branching, like the releases they did a year or 2 back, pref w/ the extendeds making of material. That'll still leave them with the double dip a few years after that could include some of the unused deleted scenes, and maybe Jacksons own POV behind the scenes doc.

As long as I can watch the extended editions without changing/flipping the discs I'll be happy tho.

I don't think branching is a posibility, when you've seen these movies as many times I have you'll notice that there are minor changes in most of the scenes that are include on both versions

an example of this is the scene on two towers were aragorn, gimli and legolas are surrounded by the rohan riders on their horses, this scene is the same lenth on both editions but it's edited on a complete diferent way on the EE, with almost no close ups and viggo's line readings are diferent

this happens frequently on the trilogy so it would be imposible to branch the existent EEs, new extended editions could be created by branching with all the common scenes exactly the same plus the additional footage but it would be another cut, just extended and not alternative

but in any case Peter Jackson still has lots of never seen scenes, there are glimpses of those on the docs on the EEs dvds, like legolas going back to the forest after king, gimli looking for jewels on a cave, a scene with Elron and Galadriel for the two towers and many more that we never even seen screencaps, on the first trailer ever for fellowship (mid2000) there's a quick shot of two women holding hands walking on a forest, and they're not any character we know, so there's maybe a whole side story abandoned, there's also the scenes for the cliamax of king where Sauron actually went out and fought Aragorn at the black gate (taking the celestial from that he used to cheat the elves into creating the rings), this was later replace with a troll that's seen fighting Aragorn on the movie

but we probably will never see that stuff, the same goes for the footage of stuart townsend as aragorn, if it was even kept

there were rumors that the first full cut of fellowship was almost 5 hours long

Excellent link. Not only did it get me more excited for LOTR Blu-ray but also The Hobbit movie and what they refer to as 'Film 2".

Can't wait for the extended versions on Blu-ray. It will be a great day when they arrive.

Whatever they decide to release, we know they will do a Ultimate LOTR Gift Set with both Hobbits + the three movies packaged together. And then after that, a new gift set with The Hobbit Extended Edition + a bust of a character and maybe a ring replica. New Line will crank out several gift sets you can sure.

Right. You know how I justified buying the first 3 gift sets? Because I thought those were the only versions I'd need to buy ever. Now comes along and I gotta re-buy them again!

I can already guarantee that I won't bother double dipping on this. The only DVD's I feel a need to double dip on are either:

(1) fullscreen (Seabiscuit, National Treasure, Friday Night Lights, to name a few)

(2) bad transfers (Batman '89, Batman Returns, and plenty of older movies like that), or

(3) Batman Begins, my favorite movie ever. Plus I got it free with my HD DVD player. I might end up buying it on Blu-ray if the bitrate has been increased, although it looks pretty damn awesome on HD DVD to begin with.

Same here. That's another group of movies I bought in fullscreen (dammit!). I don't want the prequels, just the originals.
