Default Upgrade

Well, I've been toying with the idea of upgrading to a HDTV for awhile and now, with my ol' trusty SDTV wearing down I plan to get a HDTV, but I just have a few questions.

For one, I guess with an HD TV I'll probably start buying HD movies on Blu-ray (I have a PS3 that I got for Christmas, I've heard it's not really the best Blu player, but a friend on mine says it suffices). I mean, if I'm going to upgrade no need it shouldn't be put to full use, right?

Now, with that in mind, I've also been told that I really shouldn't bother with HD unless it's a full 1080 TV. Now, is that true or will a 720 suffice. I would usually go for the best of the best, but the differences I'm seeing in prices between the two are pretty steep.

And, lastly, is there any online places that people would recommend for finding good prices for HDTVs?

Also, just want to say, I didn't see a thread like this anywhere and I'm sorry if this is the wrong place, but I wasn't sure where to put. Sorry if I posted in the wrong board or if this is a repeat.

PS3's are actually the best technical blu ray players there are right now.
They have the most upgradeability and have features that standalones do not because of this.
Also i would get a full 1080p tv if i were you if i could afford it because it's not something you buy yearly.Might as well get the whole real high definition.

Oh, PS3's are the best players. Well, that is good to know, I had heard the complete opposite from others, then again none of them actually own PS3's or anything.

So, there is a big jump from 1080 from 720. Usually, I would go for the best, but it seems the price difference is pretty large most places I've shopped around at

A 1080 tv has twice as many pixels as a 720 .The thing is that if you have anything less than 46 inch tv i've heard you might not notice a difference .I haven't tested this myself. With my 100 inch projection tv the difference was huge.

Well with a 20-25 inch tv personally i wouldn't bother buying blu rays.I'd just use the ps3 to uprate ordinary dvd's.

Most new dvd players use technology to upconvert 480p dvd's to as much as 1080p .
Upconverting players advertise this on the packaging.
It isn't as good as a blu ray is but it can be very good depending on the player and ps3 is a decent upconverting machine.

Very interesting, I've never heard of that before, how would one go about doing that?

Do you mean "How does upconvertion work on a technical level?" or "How do I watch an upconverted dvd?".

As for the hdtv's do they even make a 1080p tv that small, IIRC the smallest I've seen is 37", & like CptCanuck says the benifits of 1080p over 720p on that kind of size is debatable at best (depending on viewing distance of course).

The latter, I've never heard of upconverting a dvd or anything like that. Is there something I have to adjust on my PS3 or does it just do it automatically?

I also wasn't aware that they didn't make 1080 TVs 20-25", I just assumed they did.

I have a 40" but the viewing distance is no more than 2m.

If you're not going for a big tv (40 inches +) then I'd save money and get 720P. At 20-25 inches you won't see a difference unless you plan on putting your nose to the screen.
