Question Should I wait on getting a Blu ray player?

I want to get a BD player to enjoy Iron Man and Speed Racer plus others coming out or that are already out but im wondering about this DVD 2.0 thing.
I dont have a 1080p TV or a system that can do PCM yet so DVD 2.0 sounds kinda cool and I could use my A2 as the player and just buy the disc and enjoy them. I plan to get a 1080p TV later this year or early next.

Do really think DVD 2.0 is going to work out or will Blu ray win in the end?

I really dont want to get a BD player and then BD doesnt win and have a 3rd format in my home.

If PS3 was $299 in store id already have one, I dont want to spend 400 bucks on a BD player since I doubt Ill play any games on the PS3 since 360 covers all my gaming needs till next year.

I think the PS3 wil get a cut later this year but it would suck if DVD 2.0 comes out around the same time, I just dunno what to do.

So thoughts anyone?

I wouldnt get DVD 2.0 and I would wait until you bought you HDTV 1080P before getting a BR player

I love BR but IMO I dont think it will ever be mainstream. The average person just doesnt see the difference with BR.. Sad but true.

I will enjoy it no matter what.

So to answer your question I would just wait until you have your HDTV and snag a PS3.

Plus, we don't know if DVD 2.0 is coming out this year, unless Toshiba has announced something already and I missed it. Think about how much better can DVD 2.0 look since the resolution will still be low when compared to Blu-ray. That is your call.

Is your set 1080i?

It is rather still early to tell if Blu-ray will overtake DVD and it may not going the niche route. I have been enjoying Blu-ray since it released as I did with HD DVD, but time will tell.

I think you're worrying prematurely. Wait until you have an HDTV and re-evaluate.

Or.. buy a secondhand PS3 now and resell it down the line. The loss to you will be minimal.

I keep hearing all this shit about dvd 2.0. Seriously who the fuck cares. All it offers is HDi. So its dvds with HD menus. The players make no sense either. Sure they use super scaling but they go to 960p instead of just either doing 720p or going to 1080p. The format is more broken than blu ray when it came out. Just get blu ray and get it over with.

Wait it out man. Especially if 300 is the most you're willing to spend. The new Panny looks to be amazing but its 700 bucks (WTF?), Sony's first 2.0 player doesn't hit until the fall. Have you tried looking for used PS3's?

Honestly I would hold off if I were you. If you have already invested in hd dvd you don't want to waste your money if blu-ray also doesn't make it. Right now I am enjoying getting all the hd dvd movies I can for cheap. If blu-ray becomes mainstream you can always jump in at the right time. If you decide to get one at least wait until the one's that have the internet connection come out. These things have been so buggy I would want one that is easy to do the firmware. As far as the dvd2.0 I don't know. Personally I think one of these would be the perfect compliment to a blu-ray or even a hd dvd player if you have a lot of those movies. As much as upscaled movies look better they still don't look as good as blu-ray or hd dvd. Unless these things just blow my socks off I don't think that will change. They would be great for the tons of movies on st dvd though. J6p seems more than happy with upscaled or even just progressive scan dvd players so we will see.

Since 'DVD 2.0' isn't even past the concept stage yet, there's still a likelihood it may never enter production. In fact, even the name "DVD 2.0" is a bit of a misnomer because it's the same format people have been using for the last 11 years. "Super upscaling" a standard definition disc will never equal the quality of a high definition disc because the source is encoded at a lower resolution, and furthermore the benefits of resolutions above 720p are barely noticeable unless you own a television larger than 50". (See CNET: 720p vs. 1080 p) And no HD audio. The only market I see for DVD 2.0 is if the players sell for like $200 and start moving down -- then they'd simply become the most advanced SD DVD players and wouldn't represent much more of a threat to Blu-ray than that post by current SD DVD players.

I say, if you're going to wait on getting a Blu-ray player, factor the price into your thinking and forget about DVD 2.0. You can find players for $300 or less right now, but most of these are refurbished and/or first-run models which have some individual shortcomings--which may or may not be acceptable depending on your setup and sensibilities. The better players generally start at $400 at the moment.
I recently bought a refurbished Samsung BD-P1400 for $240. This player is slow and required a firmware update to work but beyond that I'm quite happy with it. Video player internet connectivity is a non-issue personally so I'm not concerned with profile 2.0 compatibility.

The BD-P1500 appears to be the <$400 best bet based on initial reviews, and if Samsung ever gets around to upgrading it to profile 2, then you should be relatively futureproof. Since the BDA has made it difficult to get fully featured players, I have all but written off that profile. I have 88 HD DVDs in possession so playing them is important...thus one of my reasons for acquiring the BD-UP5000.

To the OP, at this point in the game I see no rush to jump into BD. Especially if you're thinking of going the route of a stand alone unit. Most units are sub profile 1.1 and unless I'm mistaken only the PS3 is actually 2.0.

I would wait until 2.0 players can be had at an affordable price. If you absolutely want to jump into blu-ray now, I would recommend a PS3.

It all depends on your disposible income.......one thing is for sure....the longer you wait to buy a bluray player, the cheaper it will be.

I agree completely. I don't see BR going mainstream. It will be a niche market. Of course, I've been wrong before... I thought HD-DVD was going to win the format war.

I'd just wait it out, especially if you want a 2.0 player. Maybe, just maybe you might be able to find a "cheaper" (relatively speaking) 1.1 profile on Black Friday the day after thanksgiving.
