Default 'Mission: Impossible III' Sets Blu-ray, HD DVD Sales Record

For the first time, sales numbers for a Blu-ray and HD DVD title have been leaked to industry sources:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...les_Record/348

Looks like 'M:i:III' is a record-breaker in its debut week. Of course, 20,000 might not seem too huge? But at least sales are moving up, not down. And these are, after all, only first week sales...

It's definately encouraging, but I disagree with the last statement of the article about X3 being a candidate to beat M:I3. This is 20,000 combined, X3 will only be on Blu-Ray which will hurt it. Most likely the next big record setter will be another dual format release, I'm guessing Superman Returns.

Yep, I'm sure Superman Returns will easily eclipse that number. It's the other blockbuster release of the summer released on both formats.

I know I'll be pre-ordering my own copy shortly!

By my math the next gen sales are .5 % of DVD sales. I guess I was hoping for 2 or 3 % already. They didnt even give us spilt up #s so we could argue about it !

Chickens!!! I would assume a large margin is for HDDVD given the number of HDDVD players sold v. BD players sold to date. Still 20,000 HiDef discs at an average of $25 a copy is about $5M. I wonder if that 20,000 includes the box set for the MI series or just the MI:3 disc? Cause the box set was aobut $60 if I recall correctly - that's the one I purchased. But I am not sure all HDDVD player owners are buying all HDDVDs I have passed on a number of them - especially the overpriced combo discs. Now if a really big movie like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings comes out, I think you will see most every HiDef player owner buying one of those.

I'd have to agree with the statement about X3 being a candidate. More than likely, they're taking into account that there will be 500,000 PS3 in people's hands the same week X3 releases. Only if 1/5 of them buy X3, you're talking 100,000 movies for Blu-ray only.

You're claims of being on Blu-ray hurt movie sales is nothing short of delusional. The PS3 will help sell movies, no doubt about it. In one more week, we'll begin to the the impact.

I think that the PS3 will indeed have an impact but not the one that Blu supporters think that it will. Your 1/5 estimate is what is delusional. You will be lucky to get 1/15 that buys any movie at all. People will not pay $30 bucks for a movie that they can get for $15 or rent for $5. Most are going to be young people and hard core gamers that dont care about Blu-Ray.

I think the comment was made in comparison to the combined volumes of both HD-DVD and BD. In that respect, XIII volumes are not likely to be close.

What I disagree with is that @ $35 a pop for X3, I think most new PS3 owners will be blowing tere money on games and accesories for a while even before they think of buying movies. Plus most fans bought he dvd when it was released last month. SD DVD yes I understand, but w/ games most likly $60 or more, I am not wasting my $$$ on movies. I want games & accessories. So I disagree that X3 will break the MI: iii record. Superman Returns has the best shot.

If Amazon really is a true indicator then Paramount is not to be believed. They've published their top 100 lists for 2006 for both BD and HD DVD, and MI3 (available in the box set or by itself) ranks 12 and 13 on Blu-ray and 7 and 19 on HD DVD. Combining the box sales with the disc sales would certainly move it up a few places in both lists...but considering Superman Returns was number one on both lists, I doubt it could reach that point.

Amazon shows sales ranks. That has nothing to do with sales numbers. They are completely different.

Of course they're not telling us the exact numbers...it's none of our business. Perhaps there's only five discs difference between first place and nineteenth place...but it's unlikely. They are telling us how discs rank against each other...without the rest of Amazon factored in....and not skewed using the formula that they use on the normal sales rankings (the ones DVDWARS loves to go on and on about).

What can it tell us? Superman Returns sold more Blu-ray discs and more HD DVD's than any other single title. Perhaps the four total ways to buy MI:3 when all added together is greater than the combined sales of both versions of Superman Returns, but I doubt it.
