Angry fellow NY amazon buyers

New York state just passed a law that big online out-of-state retailers , such as amazon, have to now charge tax to ny costumers. Affective date I'm not sure about. Will this affect your highdef buying? I know it will mine.

Interesting. As I work in Accounting, I Googled to find out how NY could try to do this, as there is a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that that out-of-state retailers cannot be required to collect sales tax on purchases sent to states where they did not have a physical presence. NY is trying to claim that that a retailer such as Amazon holds a physical presence in the state because it derives sales through its affiliates who live there. Good luck with that one!

I wouldn't worry about paying sales tax to Amazon anytime soon. Although in reading the news article, apparently you NY residents have a ""line 56" on your State Income Tax return in which you're suppose to voluntarily declare the value of all out of state purchase and pay the sales tax yourself. As law abiding citizens, I'm sure you all do that.

How will it affect me? I'll be out more money when I shop at Amazon should this ever come to fruition. That's not going to dissuade me whatsoever from continuing to buy from Amazon, it will remain business as usual. I'm a prime member, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Should that resolution ever come to pass, I'll pony up and not give it another thought.

Let's not make mountains out of molehills.

p.s. - Concerning tax returns, I wouldn't dream of doing otherwise, CochiseGuy

Nothing good is meant to last. I may be forced to pay state tax now but that won't stop me from using Amazon. They're prices even with 8.25 percent tax are cheaper than driving and being forced to accept shitty B&M mark-ups.

Thank God I recently moved to Florida! NY is getting out of hand. If they could charge a tax on wiping your own ass they would.

Or you guys could live in Washington State like me and have been paying tax all along. Sucks but its still much less than B&M.
