Default Worst Upscaled movie...There will be Blood!!

Tonight I watched THERE WILL BE BLOOD on SD DVD, and it was brutal. I played it on my PS3 and it was just NASTY. Through most of the movie there were jaggie lines, looked like everything was going from focused to out of focus and back again. It was just BRUTAL.

Has anyone else watched this movie upscaled? Anyone else experience the same problems? I am not sure if this is the WORST dvd that I have seen upscaled, but it is certianly the worst for a new release. Watching this movie tonight the brutal picture completely ruined the movie for me....all I could see is the imperfections in the picture.

I would be very interested in anyones observations? After watching the Lord of the Rings upscaled....this is at the opposite end of the spectrum.....LOTRs is in my opinion, reference material for upscaled SD DVDs (it is amazingly impressive for a DVD)......There will be Blood was just pitiful.

edited to add:

It reminded me a very poor 5th generation burned movie which was compressed a dozen times, with jaggies, color problems, brightness problems, and focus issues.

No, it's not the worst upscaled movie. The Hitchcock Collection by St. Clair Vision are the worst DVDs I've ever viewed.

Upscaling on the PS3 sucks compared to using a standalone player.
Use your A30 for the upconversion.

The A30 is wicked sick for upscaling.. but I didnt know it was that much better than the PS3 (I dont have a PS3. I use a SONY BDP -S500)

Is there a website that will have a list of best upconverters?

No problems at all here. I watched it on a Toshiba A35 and it looked absolutely great (a lot of dark scenes with no noticeable grain). I'd say it looked pretty darn good for a SD movie.

I've watched a DVD on a PS3, and I can see a noticable difference. Also, I watched it on my A2, and I didn't have the problem that Aristottle is pointing out.

No clue. It's just from observation.

Do you mean the S300? I didn't know the S500 was released yet.

I didn't think it looked terrible. It wasn't great, but it wasn't completely awful, I thought. Colors were over saturated (like old Technicolor films), but that seems to be how it was made.

Also a "colors too hot" issue. Everything looked like it had been burned into the ground with a lot of grain to boot. It seems to be how it was filmed.

I just watched the "Fishing" scene in the extras disc, and it looked better than the movie, in my opinion. It was very clean, very crisp.

I would suggest that anyone willing to order the BD version, if possible. I would like to know if it's an All Region disc.

Which version? There's a single DVD version and a "special collector's" 2 disc version. I just finished watching the 2 disc version last night (BB Online rental) and thought it looked pretty darn good on my XA2. In fact, I was thinking I wasn't missing that much not having it on high-def. It's a pretty much dialog driven film, so not missing that much with only DD 5.1, and, again, it look sharp & clear upconverted - especially the many close-up scenes of the characters. But, I was kind of disappointed in the movie - outstanding performance by DD Lewis, and I finally got to understand what that "milkshake" line was about. But I think the title was misleading - "There Will Be Blood"? The DD Lewis character was certainly greedy & arrogant, but hardly bloodthirsty.

My vote for the worse upconverted DVD: The Covenant. When the blu-ray got the first 5 star PQ review here, I rented the DVD (didn't have a BD player back then). Maybe it was a special rental release, as it had both full screen & wide screen version squeezed on the same disc, you chose which at startup. It looked like complete crap, so bad I couldn't watch it, just fast fowarded to a couple of scenes. When I got a BD player I rented the BD - OK, it looked pretty sharp, but still a horrible movie.

My disc is a rental, and it says "feature" on it....so it might be from a two disc set, or it might be the single disc version?

Anyway....I have noticed that just about everyone who thought the movie looked good was using a Toshiba HD DVD player.........so I am going to watch the movie again on my A30 and see how much difference there is. This should be a good test.

Anyone else out there have a HD DVD player and a PS3 to do the comparison too.........???????

I was blown away last night at the difference between THERE WILL BE BLOOD and the LOTRs Trilogy upscaled.....they were at opposite ends of the upconversion scale.
