Default BD+ question to all

Well I know this wont make me fan favorite with the zealots just for questioning this but I had read something that disturbed me concerning BD+. Please take this the right way as I am only a month away from my buying into the remaining format.

I had read that BD+ incorporates usage of the encryption keys much in the same way the psp did where certain titles will not play until firmware updates are applied as it changes the encryption keys for new discs. It was my understanding that you did not have to do this and that the internet connection or firmware updating was not required for a properly working BD player as there is no internal change to the format even with new discs in the future.

since I can foresee a scenario where firmwares or internet connection will not be available all the time this would be a real pisser if it is true. Essentially it would almost be similar to a DOS attack as if I buy a new movie and have no idea it needs a firmware update prior to purchase I could be out of luck untill im somewhere where i can get the update from the internet.

The only reason this even makes me think this might be the way it works in reality is due to some of the issue players had with BD+ when the first discs came out and they all needed updates. I mostly just chalked it up to BD+ not being in the original firmware or just not properly enabled, but if a firmware update is required on current players to play future discs thats very concerning.

Well im so glad every one went out of their way to avoid a good question again but just so anyone looking for the answer to this as I was you need only look to the new AVP -R disc and the Alvin and the chipmunks discs which require a firmware upgrade to match the new Keys on the disc.

Sooooooo this means no internet no movie. So Blu Ray is limiting its market almost willingly maybe to just make the excuse of well we tried to do Blu Ray disc but no one wanted it enough so we are going downloads. Just crap.

BD+ is crap and a huge inconvenience to honest customers and its not even a nuisance for the pirates, so who is winning and who is losing with this short sighted technology. Short sighted meaning that they thought it wouldn't be cracked.

Im trying to be ok with Blu Ray but the only thing it had over HD-DVD was video bit rate and disc size only. So someone tell me why BD+ is so great again is that small difference really worth the price and inconveniences.

Im sorry this just gets me angry as this is just another stupid corporate decision that hurts the honest consumer.

put this in the smack down if you want I intended it to be just general discussion but BD+ (not Blu Ray ) just sucks.

Ah, good old BD+. I've turned into such a whiny broken record about it on here. It was the one reason I avoided Blu-ray as long as possible, and actually I thought it had a good chance of killing Blu-ray just because anybody who did a five-second Google search on it would find plenty of reasons to run screaming for the hills at the thought of supporting a technology that used it.

Alas, nobody did that search, and the general consensus seems to be that it's just there for copy protection and "I'm not a pirate, so what do I care." It still surprises me how many people cheerfully spent loads of money on Blu-ray, and even became huge cheerleaders for it, without even bothering to check out what BD+ was.

I've got the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD. I know you may have heard bad things about it, but I've got to tell you: Never buy the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD.

While you may be right, why did you ask for input when you have already made up your mind? We are all entitled to our own opinions. I am one of those described by kryloman, and proceeded on the belief that, "...it's just there for copy protection and "I'm not a pirate, so what do I care?" Thus far, I have not been disappointed. Every movie I put in plays. This was what I wanted and this is what I have received.

Should I ever wind up with a movie that does not play, then I will be well and truly pissed. However, I believe the backlash from such an occurrence would quickly cause the studios to change their errant ways.

Default BD+ - troubling at best

I also find the whole concept of BD+ troubling. The best solution is that if you ever get something that won't work to your satisfaction - return it and demand your money back. Or just don't buy into blu-ray in the first place. So far, my approach is to avoid blu-ray, for a number of reasons - not just BD+ nonsense.

Speak of the devil - I was looking at an item on eBay for cheap that has this description -

Quote:
This Panasonic BMP-BD30K Blu Ray disc play will not play Blu ray movies, It will Play normal DVDs fine when a blu ray disc is inserted, after reading for a few minutes, a message on screen states the play button has been disabled when PLAY is pushed.

being sold as is
and I was thinking "that sounds BD+, disabling the Play button".
