Report: Best Buy Sells Most Blu-ray, HD DVD Titles

According to a new research report, Best Buy is America's high-def disc leader, outselling both Wal-Mart and Amazon.com by what's being described as "a wide margin."

The report from NPD Group ranks Best Buy well-ahead of all other retailers in HD DVD and Blu-ray disc sales; Amazon.com is number two, while Wal-Mart (the nation's top standard-def DVD seller) is ranked number three.

Rounding out the top five is Circuit City (at #4), followed by Target.

In an article published by Video Business, a Best Buy spokesperson attributed the big box retailer's lead to its unique demographics as a specialty electronics chain.

"We generally have an audience that loves movies, where they are not casual fans, and these people are likely to have a great home theater experience," said Brian Lucas. "As one of the market leaders in HDTV sales, our customers tend to understand high-def more than the average consumer."

This to me is INSANE.

Best buy's priceing, selection, and getting titles on time at ALL of the closest 4 best buys by me has been absolutly horrible.

But seeing Amazon sitting at #2 is great. Finally Amazon sales rank is given some more meaning.

Doesn't really surprise me all that much. If I'm in desperate need for a movie, I'll go to Best Buy and spend a few extra bucks to get it now instead of waiting a week to get it from Amazon.

I'm more surprised that Circuit City made the list, I just did a quick price check online for Blades of Glory:

Amazon: $27.95
Best Buy: $29.99
Circuit City: $39.99

That's insane!

I don't have any complaints about Best Buy and think the selection is the best I have seen and the prices are acceptable. This is no surprise to me.

I always know way more than the BestBuy employees do about high-def equipment, movies, Xbox 360. My wife says I go in there just to quiz the employees on stuff I already know.

Best Buy is a joke or hasn't anyone noticed that their "Sale" price is basically the sticker price and they are actually just admitting that they sell Blu-Ray / HD-DVD. I can't imagine that anyone will become a winner in this format war if no one seems to be willing to lower the price on or put any of their discs on sale, but maybe this will all change around November when the push for holiday sales will start.

I too do not have a problem with Best Buy. There's just one thing...... "The Day After Tomorrow" came out October 2nd which is confirmed by the Circuit City website. But why did it not come out on Bestbuy.com or at the best buy stores? I went to 5 Best Buys around me to make sure. Nothing. I had to order my copy of that movie on Circuit City.com. So let me know please.

Otherwise I love Best Buy. Prices are acceptable. Availability seldom ever goes bad with the exception of Underworld and Troy Directors Cut. There is a Best Buy on my way to work so I go an hr early to see on the day of when both came out and both days by noon, they were sold out already. That was ricidulous! But anyway, overall it's great.

Does anyone have an answer to "The Day After Tomorrow" question? Let me konw. Thanks!

Best Buy is rarely the "best buy". All their titles are way over priced unless they have some special sale and even then they are still more expensive than what I pay at Amazon with my 10% off, free 2day shipping, and no taxes. I've only purchased 1% of my HD titles at Best Buy. I try to avoid it at all costs for my HD movies.

i had to buy tekkonkinkreet blu-ray from amazon.com and also Royal space force wings of honneamise blu-ray/dvd combo from amazon because best buy has those as online only and 20% more then the retail price. But with Best Buy its one of my biggest places to buy Blu-Ray movies

As an employee of Best Buy, I do agree with the previous comment about how most customers know more about high def movies, equipment, pretty much anything to do with high def, actually, than our employees. That's not to say we ALL don't know anything, just most of us.

As a HD-DVD early adopter, I get very frustrated with the lack of intelligence I see presented on the sales floor when it comes to HD-DVD or Blu-ray, as I plan on purchasing a Blu-ray player in the very near future. People don't know the difference in resolution, what Dolby True HD is (some have never even heard of it), that you can traverse menus without leaving playback of the title, or if a movie is even available on HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

But there are those of us here that spread the word like gospel, urging non-believers to just watch ONE movie, just one, and they will see why it is all going to end up HD-DVD AND Blu-ray, not one or the other. DVD will be around for a long time, but eventually, as you all know, it will get to be mainstream, until then, don't count us all out at Best Buy, the training materials just aren't there. Me, I just trained myself and fell in love with HD-DVD the very first time I watched a movie (MI:3), and I have had a hard time going back and watching anything on DVd. We'll get there, too bad we aren't already...

Default Day After Tomorrow

Just to let you know, we do have The Day After Tomorrow here at my Best Buy, but we have a release date of Oct. 9th, not the 2nd. Bash us all you want, we have to go by the street date given to us, it's not like we made one up to screw you guys. But I appreciate the passion...
