Porn Slow to Build Steam on Blu-ray, HD DVD

Widely credited with helping to fuel early adoption of both VHS and standard-def DVD, adult video distributors been surprisingly slow to embrace either of the next gen disc formats.

Although there was much speculation in the early months of the high-def format war that the adult video industry would be a major factor in determining which format would prevail, thus far there have been scant few porn releases on either format.

Longtime readers of this site will remember that earlier this year, there were indications that Blu-ray backers had sought to prevent the release of pornography on the format. The Blu-ray Disc Association ultimately denied those reports, and indeed by late April, Vivid Entertainment had debuted the first Blu-ray title with their cross-format release of 'Debbie Does Dallas... Again.' (The first adult title to hit HD DVD was Wicked Pictures' 'Camp Cuddly Pines Power Tool Massacre,' back in December 2006.)

Today, DVD Empire lists sixteen adult titles on HD DVD, and only three on Blu-ray.

Industry observers point to several factors in the genre's slow high-def build, including the higher cost of next-gen disc production and an apparently growing belief among distributors that they'd be better served leap-frogging over the high-def disc formats altogether, and instead focus their efforts on next-gen IP-based delivery of high-def content.

But while the current selection of high-def porn titles may prove somewhat bleak, early adopters hoping for more need't give up hope just yet. The last several months have seen a steady trickle of new high-def releases, with leading adult entertainment distributor announcing two titles in the last month alone -- one for HD DVD ('Stood Up') and one for Blu-ray ('Debbie Loves Dallas').

I wonder how big the demand really is. I imagine the same sort of people with hi-def players, and HDTVs (myself included) are more prone to buy/download porn on the internet, rather than buy discs in a store.

Really, when I can download porn and stream it from my PC to the HDTV, why would I ever buy the over-priced discs they put out?

i support hd dvd porn. i own 4 discs. pirates, debbie does dallas again, dreamgirlz (right now adameve.com exclusive), and i'm waiting on girls gone skiing to come in the mail. girlvania is on sale at adameve for 35, along with dreamgirlz. pirates is a definate to get porn adventure/comedy... actually pirates comes with hd dvd standard, getting hd dvd into porn fans everywhere... something that the combo disc non-porn studios should have done...(ahem universal and warner... paramount/cbs is doing it for star trek.) anyone here see curse eternal, island fever 3, or camp cuddly pines powertool massacre yet? who else supports next gen disc porn and what do you got?

Dunno why anyone would want to buy porn discs when you can download dvd quality stuff for $15 a month.

Well you can download DVD quality stuff for free. With $15 a month you are just "renting" your videos.

I personally don't have any porn HD DVDs yet but would like to pick up a few. The super high prices have been a deterrent but when I can pick one up for $25 I'll be all over it.

I'd rather pay the $15 a month for a fast download and guaranteed malware free product than search the web for free porn.
And you're not renting it.Youu can burn and watch wherever you want from hard drive.

I understand that there are those who enjoy porn. I have never been intersted in porn. Just think it is smut and tasteless. Yes...to see a attractive woman in her bithday suit is always arrousing. To see some of the acts they perform is just...not as attractive,imho.

$15 dollars for DVD quality is quite different than 1080p high definition.

I think the big difference between now and then is the internet. You don't need to brown bag a movie from a strip mall 24 hour video store to get smut.

As far as HD porn goes.. some things are better served blurry! There might be such a thing as too much detail. (Just read Canoe's post. Sorry wasn't trying to steal your thunder.)

some girls are spectacular in hd... idk whats wrong with it. every hd porn i have is outstanding in quality. they take time for detail unlike the on-porn movies.

I rather watch it on my computer, thank you. I don't need to see the vein of the penis. Porn on the computer is good enough for me.
