Default The Best (and Worst) of 2006

Hello all --

It's the end of the year and time for High-Def Digest's first-ever Best-Of list. We've picked our faves of the year, as well as the biggest disappointments:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/feature...s_of_2006.html

Now, I know some will jump all over me as the list is a bit HD DVD-heavy. But so it goes... I think Blu-ray is just getting started with things like HD exclusive extras, etc., so next year's list will be interesting to say the least.

Hope you enjoy the feature anyway, and of course, it is just subjective nonsense we all love to do at the end of the year. Though we do hold more weight than the Golden Globes, ya know...

Oh, now it's not ALL HD DVD heavy. Sure, HD DVD's all over the "Best of" list, but when it comes to the "Worst of" list, Blu-ray's got it in the bag!

Great list, btw.

Nice compilation. Glad to see "Casablanca" win for best transfer. I haven't seen it (on HD) yet, but I picked it up today along with Forbidden Planet as a x-mas gift for the old man. Looks like both titles are winners.

WOW!

Blu-ray really hit the shit fan hard, did it not. But I suppose this will become yet another poll which fails to challenge Blu-ray's superiority!

Thanks for the list. Those are most of the movies I purchased.

Nice list there Peter.

The list is HD heavy for a reason. Blu-Ray, honestly, sucked until the mid August-September. All early releases (with the exception of a few) were an extremely disappointing way to launch a new format. I will say that Blu-Ray is definitely catching up though with some impressive titles as of late.

Well done! A very well thought out, well made list. Congratulations and please keep up the excellent reviews!

I've seen just about all the HD DVD titles and couldn't agree more. The only Blu-Ray titles I've seen are XXX and Fifth Element - as demos at stores - and agree with those selections as well.

Great list, lots of deserving titles right where they should be.

But my one disagreement would have to be King Kong for best transfer. Sure it boats an amazing picture, but I personally found some of the images a little flat at points throughout the film. Yes, I'm nitpicking, but I guess I just wasn't as impressed as some other people were (especially given my disc has a glitch about halfway into the film)

Great list, but calling Army of Darkness one of the worst of 2006 is utter nonsense. (More like the reverse)

If the Hulk rated 5 stars for HD DVD then why didn't it place ahead of King Kong for Best Transfer - New Release? Plus I would have expected Robin Hood for an Honorable Mention in the Catalog Section.

A good read and actually prompted me to order a couple of titles that I might not otherwise have (managed to get a PS3 60GB on order from Circuit City last night).

I have to say that given all the rave reviews for Robin Hood I found a quick look at the first 5 minutes was rather disappointing. I certainly didn't feel this was anywhere near the quality of "The Searchers" or "Oh What a Lovely War" on SD (haven't checked "The Searchers" on HD-DVD yet!).

The intro had quite a bit of dust and the picture was rather soft. Admittedly I was looking at it very close-up on a 50" plasma, and I'd just checked out "Kong" which was superb in terms of PQ. But what I saw didn't make me want to move it to near the top of the "To be watched" HD-DVD pile.
