Stop thinking about it, do it. Take too long and the only person who is gonna loose is you.

It just tried to update the software from version 1.99, and after it had finished I got error code 8001050F. I also get that same code when a game does not load

Definitely going to return it to the guy.

Hopefully he will let me keep Killzone 2, and give me back a good chunk of money

I hate to say it, but this is pathetic that this system stopped working correctly after 2 years of use. My original, fata** PS2 that is 6-7 years old still works perfectly

Edit: 6-7 years of gaming

I hope he doesn't scam you with a bogus phone number. If you get some cash back, you're best off saving up a little more and getting a slim, that way you at least have a warranty to fall back on. Hope it works out for you.

I've been in constant contact with him, he told me if it doesn't end up working for me that he would refund my money, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get that in writing and signed :/

And that's my plan. If I can get money back, I'll just buy a new one. The reason why I bought this is because it was backwards compatible (what I was looking for), came with 7 games and 1 blu-ray movie (including Killzone 2 which I've been looking forward to), and it was under 400

Yeah, the lack of BC in the new units is sad. I have a 40GB unit and I just save up my desire to play PS2 games unitl I'm ready to have a marathon week and get it all out at one time. That way I don't have to leave the old brick hooked up all the time.

And if you really trust this guy and the BC is really important to you, you could just get $150 back from him and then pay for the drive replacement via Sony.

It's not that super important to me until my PS2 breaks. I just thought it would have been nice to clean up some space, but whatever. The guy still hasn't responded to my texts. Next thing I do tomorrow is call him if he doesn't respond.

If you have the space to spare, the quality of the BC isn't exactly great and the games still look and sound better on the PS2 hardware itself.

Sorry about your mishap and that's exactly why I'm reluctant to buy any used electronics. Changing the BD drive is actually very simple but that's another $80 or so to spend.

Seriously though, I'd give anything back at the first sign of a problem. The new units also run much cooler and take less space (the matte finish is pretty good too)

Along with all the ones you guys have mentioned I would love a disc with all the Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver games. A Devil May Cry collection might be cool too.

Alright well it looks like I'm forced to keep it. After numerous calls and text messages, the seller still will not answer me. He either A) New he was selling a bad product, or B) said "oh f*** it, I'm going to let him eat the cost".

From the sound of what I've read here and in various other sites/articles, my problem seems to lie in the disc reader?

I constantly get an error code 80010505F.

Games will either A) play and then freeze, rendering the game and console unresponsive or B) not read the disc, and during either of these instances, when I try to eject the disc from the drive, it takes a while for the system to process the request and execute the command.

What would my best option be, seeing that I cannot get a hold of the seller?
Send it in to Sony and have the reader repaired for $150+, or could they just substitute said unit for a newer model + cash on my end?

Either way I'll be eating at least part of what I paid, but I could still sell some of the games that I am not interested in.

Seeing as you have a REAL working number for this deuchbag, here's what I suggest before spending a dime.

Send him a text with a short opening sentence letting him know that the unit is defective, and that you're awaiting his response and can respect that he might have recently been too busy to get back to you. Then let him know that you don't want to be scammed. Then threaten litigation with some BS line about "I talked to my family's/dad's/uncle's (whoever's) lawyer, and he plans to ensure that the seller is tracked down (using the phone number provided), and forced to compensate you.

Basically make it short and sweet. "Hey, perhaps you've been too busy to chat over the last day or so. However, this unit is defective, and I expect you to return my call soon. If not, I'm going to think you've scammed me. In any event, I plan on working this out with you either over the phone, or in small claims court with the help of X (just make up a scenario where you know a lawyer who'd be willing to spend their time helping you for free)."

You have nothing to lose by trying this, especially since he's already ignoring you and just assumes that you'll go away.

The next day, send (to his email) a copy of a filled out small claims form (just google small claims form, there are plenty of fill-in-the-blank forms on the internet).

Worst case, the guy calls your bluff and ignores you.
Best case, you scare him enough to work with you or give you a refund
