Console death stories
Well, after 2 years and 8 months of service, it appears that Bubba, my nickname for the PS3 has finally passed on. Blu Ray drive apparently has died. I am not hopeful for retaining my same model back, nor getting backwards compatibility. It dies just before the supposed Slim comes out.
And 149.99 goes down the drain...

The rep said that my 20 gig should be replaced with the exact same model if it's fixable
(in which they say it is), so maybe Bubba won't die, he'll just get a Blu Ray drive upgrade! I'm not familiar with any repair shops, so I just went with Sony. I'll live. But I'm gonna have to work more hours to pay this repair off (No pun intended?)

not trying to get in the smackdown type discussion but anecdotally on this site ps3's are turning up like ps2's it seems, with a similair timeframe to.
I'm almost ready to get a blu standalone to avoid my BD drive from dying like my ps2 dvd drive did, i'm afraid to watch movies on it. And sorry about bubba:

A friend of mine had his drive die just the other day as well... $149 for Sony to fix it.
This seems to be a common issue.
