Condolences on the dead console. As you know, it happened to me a while back as well. Good thing it happened during a dry spell, this would be painful if Uncharted 2 had just dropped or something...

I had that happen to me, but it wasn't a shitty disc drive. My AV inputs somehow died...

By the way, if you're especially awesome, you can swap out the drives. I saw someone do it on YouTube and it worked.

Sometimes shit just breaks a little more often than you would expect, but not the fucking timebomb that the 360 is.

it's obviously nowhere near as bad as RRoD, but if this site's smackdown community were to poll today we might be at 10%

For some reason my PS3 jsut started making a horrible crackling noise every time sound is supposed to be output. This "just" started happening after 2 years of ownership.

I will check the internal volume but I haven't messed with it so....

It's either the Ps3 or the receiver and neither will be cheap to fix (and I NEED my BC too).

Well, if using the disc drive for DVD"s / Blurays is a good way to kill it I'll update you all when mine dies.
My fiancee watches LOTS AND LOTS of stuff on the PS3, so if it's a ticking time bomb I'll find out sooner or later.

Sounds like a receiver issue, I'd unplug everything, use some dust off on your receiver, hook it back up and try again.

This fixed my receiver last time it was making odd noises...

Also, to note. By 2 years and 8 months into the PS2 generation, I was on my third PS2. So, no, this ain't DRE yet.

And to boot, I had to send in my laptop for repairs today too due to overheating issues. Thanks for the kind words though!

When my PS3 died, not even a year in, that's when I decided 100% that I was getting a 360. Irony defined.

By the way, didn't you upgrade the harddrive in your system?

Yup. I just call it the 20 Gig, because it's special. Pure black. No silver chrome. Rarest of all standard models probably.

I asked cuz I was curious as to if you'll have to dig the old harddrive back out or if they'll just fix it and send it back to you even if the newer drive is in there.

They said I could just pull it out, and I don't even have to put the old one in. I do have it somewhere though

I had just gotten MLB 09: The Show though and I was pretty eager to get into the Franchise mode. Having no laptop is what makes it really burn though

Dust off? Just a can of compressed air?

Can't hurt I suppose.
