NPD, GfK ChartTrack and Enterbrain Join Forces

Leading sales monitors the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain have released the Top Global Markets Report, the first in a new series of monthly reports detailing videogame software sales across the US, UK and Japan.

The first of the multi-continent reports lists Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV as 2008's bestseller to date with 6,293,000 units sold, despite the fact that the game only released in late April in the US and UK and has yet to hit the Japanese market.

Now, I saw this earlier, and if you're thinking "WTF, GTA IV sales look extremely low" just remember that this number only includes the UK and not the rest of Europe. Which will provide a significant chunk of sales. Bearing that in mind, 10 million in sales has probably happened worldwide for the game.

I think it's great that they joined forces, but I do have one question. Isn't that number still based on numbers they get from their vendors and not necessarily everyone? Thus couldn't sales be actually larger than they're reporting?

Yeah, pretty much. However, Gfk hardly ever releases their numbers, so that fills a piece of the puzzle by doing these monthly statements.
