GC 2008: Xbox 360 Controller Redesigned

Finally! This was the one thing keeping the 360 controller from being perfect (IMO).

Bidding farewell to the spongy d-pad.

UK, August 20, 2008 - A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on.

Hopefully, it won't be too long before these come here. I'll trade in my two old controllers for two of these.

i'd prefer to see them put the sticks on the same lateral level and move the D-Pad up.

huh.... Honestly I don't get a whole bunch of play off of the d-pad on the 360 so for me this more of a "well ok" kind of thing. But nifty...

that is actually what I hate the most about the Playstation controller.

Whatever! It's so much better having them offset rather then having your hands squeezed together.

I really like the 360 controller over PS3's so I'm gonna get SF4 on 360, and I'd like to have the better d-pad for it and 2d games, but I just can't imagine spending the money for a new controller just for it.

The D-Pad is for selecting weapons or scrolling through options in game. It's practically worthless. They need to completely dump it and reimagine something else.
