Battletoads was the first one I thought of when I saw the thread title. Game is practically impossible.

Double Dragon definitely deserves to be on that list.

Also, Batman (the movie game) on the NES was freakin tough. Never beat it without a Game Genie.

Ninja Gaiden is hard, but for almost all of the wrong reasons. Shitty camera, unfair enemy tactics (they can juggle you as long as their attack script wants).

DMC3 was, indeed, brutally hard, and definitely better. I beat it on Easy and it was still a skill tester. I don't think there is a single boss I beat on the first try. The final battle is badass to play, though, because you gotta be quick and talented on the controller.

You can't get juggled in NG. Have you even played it?

I put so many damn hours into that game. When you finally did make it to the finally level (that weird rotating tower) it took like 1,000 tries each time.

The Capcom blog was saying that Mega Man 9 should be added to that list if there's another one next year.
