Revealed yesterday, offical today, as Eidos and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of DC Comics announce Batman: Arkham Asylum. Developed by Rocksteady Studios, the player assumes the role of Batman as he delivers The Joker to Arkham Asylum. There, the imprisoned super-villains have set a trap and an immersive combat gaming experience unfolds. With an original script penned by Emmy Award-winning Batman writer Paul Dini, the game brings the universe of DC Comics' detective to life with stunning graphics."

Eidos has made Batman: Arkham Asylum all official, confirming the earlier revealed Rocksteady Studios-developed trip to Gotham City. Calling the game a "haunting, action detective game," Eidos notes that it and Warner Bros. will publish the action adventure title globally for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2009.
According to Eidos, the game's story, penned by Batman Beyond's Paul Dini, will center on a trap set by Arkham Asylum inmates for Batman as he delivers Joker to the infamous prison. While much of the thunder of Eidos' announcement was taken by the dynamic duo of Game Informer and NeoGAF yesterday, Warner Bros. Interactive president Martin Tremblay calls the game both "graphically distinct" and "incredibly dark," as players hunt down and do battle with Gotham's worst. We look forward to additional details about Batman: Arkham Asylum as they become available, and have tossed a batarang in Eidos' direction for more.

Some details reportedly from GI have been posted on NeoGAF (read: we can't confirm any of this at the moment). The Unreal Engine 3-powered game is going for a gritty, Chronicles of Riddick-esque feel. DC Comics' Wildstorm is crafting the characters' look. Some villains in the game include Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Penguin, Riddler, Scarecrow and more. According to the post, Arkham Asylum is projected for a 2009 release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 and is not being rushed to tie into any TV or film marketing cycles.

If Kevin Conroy is onboard to voice Batman...then it might be worth a rental. However, even with Dini writing this, I can't helpy but feel worried. It's not the story that has me worried, or nervous...but the fact that team of noobs is doing it, and that it might be First Person.

I heard it's third person, a la Gears of War. And the only game this team has made was Urban Chaos: Riot Response. Which averages around a 75% at GameRankings. That's not TOO bad. I think I'll rent it, if above an 8, I'll buy it.

My ultimate Batman title would be a cross between Splinter Cell and Spider Man 2 The Movie Game/GTA.

I am a comic media whore. If it is a movie or game I will buy it. It has got to be better than Batman Dark Tomorrow....then again the recovery from my vasectomy was more fun than that game.

Nice. I was actually searching google a few weeks ago trying to see if any new Batman games were in the works. The last Batman game i played and imo was the best, was Batman: Vengeance on xbox.

Batman Rise of Sin Tzu was not bad either. It had Kevin Conroy doing the voice. One of the few Batman games I actually finished.

Yea it was a solid game, i followed that games progress for awhile but never got it. It wasnt my type of game i prefer the action/adventure type, that this batman looks to be. I did end up playing my cousins copy of Rise of Tzu, and it was good entertainment. Hopefully these guys can deliver with this game.

This looks like crap. The only way I would buy a game called "Arkham Asylum" is if it were actually based on the trade paperback story, which was an awesome one.

I think that last scan is of Killer Croc, which is crazy. Joker looks horrible.

There should be a game based on the Blood Rain series. Batman as a vampire = awesome.
