So.... No PGR4, GT5 prologue, Wipeout HD (1080p 60fps... almost makes me want to get a PS3 that one)?
I think people will be playing GTA4 for the foreseeable near future though. What's the point mentioning only HD gaming exclusives? If you are showing off a system I'm sure the likes of Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway and Tomb Raider underworld will do the job. |

Sorry to see that the PS3 exclusive Ratchet and Clank was not included. This has to be one of the most graphically stunning games out there and great fun, aside from being very highly rated by most reviewers. On the other hand, this list is strictly one person's opinion. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was a sure-fire, a great game.

Not sure I cared for the way those lists were balanced. GT5 and MGS4 demand making lists like that.
Oh well, just one guys opinion I suppose

Where's the thumb down icon?
Guess we'll be praising gorgeously looking games that play like shit and have the worst story lines ever played over games that are excellent Way to jump on the HD bandwagon and eliminate some killer titles on the nonHD side of gaming *cough* gaming ![]() Since we are focusing on HD gaming, can we throw in PC gaming too?

There are at least 26 titles on the PS3 that run in native 1080p. That does not equate with amazing graphics, but it makes amazing graphics look better.

Seriously after having bought a PS3 and tried out the so called 'Next Generation HD Gaming' I was truly under whelmed! My PC has been creating much better graphics for a very long time. But the way that people go on about them it's as if their like have never been seen before! If the graphics are lame in the first place then just because you render them in HD doesn't make them any better!
I too think PC gaming should be included especially since the vast majority of people who visit this site are probably doing it on their PC!!! That said i do agree that the list is very unbalanced. This guy obviously prefers to tout the 360 over the PS3. Its a shame because when this Gaming thing was announced i was actually excited. |

While I do like that posts like this exist on this site to open other hi-def enthusiasts up to the world of "HD Gaming," the choices for games were vastly underwhelming in some respects. As others have said, the list is harshly unbalanced.. I see the extra effort in the Xbox 360 games listed and can respect said effort (for the fact that not too many large hits will be coming out this year for the console), but where it would have been entirely Too easy to note some particularly astounding games for the PS3, you settled with Aqua?? lol. And Surely LBP is a game I'm definitely looking forward to, I can't imagine how hard one must have had to work in order to avoid adding the likes of Gran Turismo: Prologue and Metal Gear Solid. I mean GT:Prologue is toted as one of the most photorealistic racers out there, and with it coming out just this week, you would assume that making mention to that particular game with the "see for yourself, soon" push a logical idea.
Then you have MGS4.. IGN, 1UP, and GamePro alike (all having had the opportunity to play the FULL game -- with a gag order by Kojima & co. -- I suggest looking up their previews. I would provide links but I haven't made enough posts, unfortunately have all made short mention to the fact that it is one of the best looking AND sounding games ever made... I don't know, for those respects alone I just had expected at Least that one to be part of a list promoting the best in line of quality (aud/vid, if not game quality itself).

Chiming in here to explain some of the choices.
I knew going into this article that the exclusion of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue were going to raise a few eyebrows, but they were judgment calls I made for the following reasons. With GT Prologue, it was the simple fact that it was already heavily focused in the previous High-Def Digest article. I didn't want to cover it extensively and then cover it AGAIN in this one, as that seemed like overkill. As far as MGS4, there were a few reasons for that. One was my broader agenda of wanting to introduce games with a variety of different looks (hence Vesparia, LittleBigPlanet and Aqua) to showcase games that don't all fall squarely in the "wartorn battlefield" aesthetic which is already represented by Gears of War and Killzone 2. Another reason is that MGS4 frankly needs no introduction. It has the same level of hype and will no doubt benefit from a massive marketing campaign when the time comes. With everyone knowing so much about the title, it seemed better to cover other games that don't already have the spotlight on them. And of course the other thing is MGS4 may very well benefit from its own fully focused feature when the time comes closer to July. But you didn't hear that from me. There were lots of other decisions that went behind the games finally selected for this article, but the bottom line was this; I wanted to show a broad selection of different visual styles to show HD gamers that it wasn't all corridors, battlefields and greys and browns. Those couldn't be ignored, of course, were represented by the choices for the two respective consoles, but there were other games with dramatically different choices in art design that could equally showcase the power of the two consoles, and that's how the call was made for this article. |
