And Snad Wolf gave me 95% of the weapons. I forget which i'm missing, some dragon gun I think, best thing to do is print off a list and cross out what you have.

My local target has Mass Effect 2 on clearance for like $13. Should i bite? Never played the original and typically don't care for western RPGs (though I did enjoy Fable 2). But rented Fallout 3 once and didn't get sucked in, and rented Mass Effect 1 once and played it for a bit but then had to return it and didn't really probably give it enough time to get interesting

I know it's supposed to be OMG good but I don't know if it's good enough to transcend my lack of general interest in the genre itself. I like rpg's for their character and story. I don't really enjoy spending countless hours though figuring out inventories, how to build this or that weapon or item; and having a zillion different menus and codexes to go through to figure out where I need to go next in the storyline.

None of that is Mass Effect. Codexes are optional and not necessary to understand the story. Characters and story is fantastic. Combat is fantastic.

The only issue in the original, and this is more of an issue on new game +, is management of weapon mods. The reason why it's more of an issue in NG+ is because you will have so many duplicates of the same stuff. For one playthrough, it shouldn't be a problem.

Modding weapons is easy and actually, not necessary unless playing on Insane.

Yea in the first game I got to the point where Shepard was made the first human spectre or whatever. But I remember the inventory management, and equipping items, was very confusing (for me.) I don't like it when its too convoluted. Do I need to play the 1st one to appreciate the 2nd one? Or would reading a synapse of the plot of part 1 on wikipedia suffice for playing part 2?

You will definitely get more out of 2 if you play 1 first because you can import your save from 1 and it remembers decisions you made and they have an impact in 2.

The item management is not too bad in 1

You have
Omni-tools for tech related staff (Kaiden, Garrus, Tali)
Bioamps for biotics (Wrex, Liara, Kaiden)

If you are a Biotic, Sentinel or Vanguard you will have biotic powers and also require a bioamp
If you are a Sentinel, Engineer or Infiltrator, you will have tech powers and require Omni-Tools

Some Armor is race specific, so some armor will only fit Wrex, others only Garrus or Tali. The rest should have interchangeable armor. Obviously heavy armor is restricted to Soldiers.

Aside from that, you have 4 class of weapons, snipers, pistols, assault rifles and shotguns. I only keep the 2 I am proficient in for any character as it's less hassle.

Each weapon or armor piece can store some mods, but I wouldn't worry about this too much.

Alternately, instead of playing through one to enjoy two you could just hold off and buy ME2 when it hits on PS3. It will be more expensive, I imagine, but you'd save time by not playing ME1 while you'd still get to experience the story and still make key decisions. In my opinion, ME1 has a much better story while ME2 has much better gameplay.

If time isn't really an issue though, it'd probably be best to just play all the way through ME1 and then get into ME2. ME1 really doesn't get going until after you become a spectre.
