Sony registers "Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal" domain
Apparently a big game is to be revealed Thursday, looks like the Sony Smash Bros. thing is happening finally.
The domain registration (via VG247) is for the .com of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, all one word. Unsurprisingly, it's registered to Sony Computer Entertainment America.
On top of that, Geoff Keighley has tweeted that GTTV is set to reveal "huge new PS3 exclusive" with footage, and had some tweet-banter with Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida this morning. It's unconfirmed of course, but seems pretty likely that this will be the official unveil of Battle Royale.

The issue is more I think Smash Bros. is heavily fueled by people's nostalgia that I just don't think the Sony camp has yet. I also suspect they'll have third party characters that became famous on a Playstation system like Snake, Spyro, and Crash.

I don't like Smash Bros., as I find the combat completely incoherent, but Nintendo has the library of characters to do that type of game. Like you said, it feeds off nostalgia.
Almost every single success the Sony platform has had, as been from third parties. Unless you count the GT series, but I don't see them pitting Kratos against a Ford Mustang. Anyway, I just don't see them being able to muster a list of compelling characters, or scenarios on which the gamer base would care to participate. It just seems silly for them to try and make a game focused on characters. It reeks of desperation.
That's all. -

If it's SSB with PlayStation'y characters (even 3rd party), it's way too desperate/me-too'ish for me to care about it.

Aw c'mon Sony... That name is awful.
Great quotes on the internet:
I hear Galaxy is brilliant, and it probably is. Just can't picture myself sitting down and playing it. That would take time away from watching the Disney Channel and working on my coloring book.Ryan Payton (MGS4 Associate Producer) -

I just don't understand the market it for it. Nintendo has that all age market going for it. It works for everyone. I don't like that game, but I understand it's existence.
Sony is more known for its older leanings. I cannot understand what they are thinking with this idea. I just don't see their fanbase being interested in it. Hopefully, they do some research and decide to cancel it.
Now, I could see them coming out with some Mario Party clone. But, it'll probably still suck. -

Especially since Mario Party itself sucks.

I know it's not exactly the kind of thing anyone has been asking for, but if it was $20 on PSN I'd buy it in a heartbeat just to have some fun fighting with my friends. As a full retail release though, I doubt it.
