Speaking of Tribes....
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/02/21/tr...m-development/You should be excited about Tribes. It’s superb, and currently in closed beta. Luckily, the latest issue of PC Gamer comes with a beta code and 350 gold – that’s enough to unlock a specialist class or pimp out one of you existing ones.
“People have maybe forgotten about the adrenaline rush of the old school shooters like Quake, Unreal Tournament and, of course, Tribes.” Executive producer on upcoming free to play shooter Tribes: Ascend, Todd Harris, misses the twitch shooters of old.
We asked him why he thought they were less popular these days. “I think a lot of it is the multi-platform consideration,” he said. “Games have this huge marketing spend so many of these shooters look to go multi-platform, meaning not just the PC but at least two consoles as well.”
Todd says controllers don’t offer the same freedom of movement as a mouse and keyboard, making it harder for devs to put an emphasis on raw dexterity: “The control scheme on the consoles does limit somewhat the speed and the twitch in which a game can operate – I mean your turn distance is only so far.”
“That’s not to say that someone couldn’t make a fast twitch game for those consoles,” says Todd, “But it’s easier to go to a lower common denominator – not having to turn as fast, not having to look 360 degrees in an instant – to make more of a hide-and-seek style, corridor-based, tactical shooter,” he says.Intel i5 2500k (@4.7Ghz) + XFX Radeon 7970 3GB RAM! + 16GB DDR3 RAM (STEAM/Origin: Nealon_Greene)

I've been playing the beta for the past 3 months. It's pretty good overall. I will have to post some screen shots. I was a HUGE Tribes junky back in 1999-2004. Tribes 2 was kind of eh as I felt it lost the real essence of what Tribes was. The less said about the 3rd game the better.
Overall, this game kind of feels somewhere in between Tribes 1 and 2.
I really wish someone would just take Tribes and just upgrade the graphics. Leave the same maps and everything ( and Renegades mod) -

Yeah, Tribes 2 I thought made the maps very bland and large. The game played better I thought on smaller maps. Also, they put less of an emphasis on customizing your loadouts and using all kinds of defenses.
When Tribes 2 came out, that was the first time I had ever fully built a new PC from the ground up. Before that I always bought store bought rigs and added things to them like better video cards, more RAM, etc. Because I was such a Tribes fanboy and was eagerly awaiting Tribes 2, I went out and bought all the parts for a new PC and assembled them the day before Tribes 2 ( probably a mistake as I didn't allow myself much time if problems arose, which thankfully they didnt lol). -

FCK yeah!!!!Of course moving and aiming at speeds that make Call of Duty or Quake look slow requires a more thoughtful and measured approach to shooting. Typically, shooters task you with aiming your cursor at the enemy and squeezing off a few rounds, but in Tribes it's about anticipating and obfuscation. Projectiles are powerful but often move slow or have a delay before they detonate. This means you'll have to aim ahead of your opponent, trying to predict what route they're going to take.Intel i5 2500k (@4.7Ghz) + XFX Radeon 7970 3GB RAM! + 16GB DDR3 RAM (STEAM/Origin: Nealon_Greene)

I've been playing this game the last few days. It's free to play, 3 of the class are unlocked and you can either pay up to open up the rest, or gain in-game gold at a snails pace and someday in a couple decades, unlock the other classes.
It's interesting, although twitch shooters aren't really my type of game. The skiing mechanic is neat thoughCurrently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

Yeah, the game play is almost exactly like Tribes 1 (which is awesome!). I do wish you could unlock things earlier though without spending money. I mean come on, you need a ton of XP to unlock the spinfusor...the iconic Tribes weapon. You should start off with that! I do like the assault rifle though. In Tribes the blaster was a pretty useless weapon. The AR takes its place and is actually pretty decent.

In such a case I wouldn't even bother paying a dime.

Yeah, I was under the impression that it wasnt very expensive (like normal game cost). I didn't look too far into it though.
?? Its free to play. Their business model is to let you play the game for free, but incentivize you to reward their efforts with cash.Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

Except that doesnt make sense in a context where it's a F2P model and, not only do you want to reward a dev for their hardwork, you'd like to unlock the rest of the game (doing so through in-game earned gold would take a lifetime). You're arguing that you wouldn't bother paying a dime for a game where the devs chose to make it F2P with unlocking transactions; yet, you hundreds of dollars into kickstarter for a signed coaster and embroidered napkins?

The problem is it doesn't start off very balanced. The people who paid to unlock have a clear advantage with MUCH better weapons. The spinfusor alone is an awesome weapon. It gets frustrating because it costs 42,000 XP to unlock the spinfusor. Your first weapon you can unlock. It would take about 20-30 matches to get that much xp. Sure, that's not a lot but you will be dying a whole lot those matches and it;s not much fun.
