interesting. Honestly had no idea Ivy needed LC for max overclock performance. Just now googled and read an article about it over at Tom's.

More transistors on a smaller die surface = way hotter CPU.

I stand corrected on the first point(though you have to admit that case is more an outlier than the norm), but on the second point I'm not seeing it, unless the Hyper 212+ is pushing some serious CFM, which means its gonna be loud(not a gripe for me) and wear out relatively quick(that fan bearing is going to deteriorate faster). The blocks for the Intel and Corsair LC solutions also have much better clearance so you don't have to think about whether or not it'll fit over top your RAM. This is particularly true of LGA 2011 fans as they like to overlap the ram slots on either side so some RAM won't fit while the fan is in play. There's also the fact that liquid is a much better conductor of heat than air, which has almost no conductivity.

For Ivy I'd certainly go with an LC solution. Intel's works great, but is a royal pain to install. Twonun should comment on the installation of the Corsair(easy, tricky, difficult, Ninja Gaiden?) for the sake of comparison. With all those transistors so close to each other, I don't think a stock or middle of the road fan will be able to keep the temps comfortably low. If you're going i7, there is no question, LC that thing. If i5, your call.

I have seen some complaints about installing the corsair LC solutions because either the hoses are much stiffer than people anticipated, or the directions are very unclear as to how and where to install the fan/water block

I think that sort or solution is my ultimate goal though. Eventually, I'm going to SLI some 670's in my case which will adversely effect the airflow. Also, it gets warm here in the summer and I don't always run the A/C - I'd like that to not be a huge issue

Oh, I'm not saying the Hyper 212+ is better than all LC...its just that in temperature benchmarks, the H60 is the same as the 212+ for THREE times the price!

Yeah, I would love to use a LC but my Hyper 212+ is actually giving me about the same temps people on here are saying. I idle at 24 and spike up to about 43 under load. Not sure how much better a LC would be.

It wouldn't be any better....overall case might have cooler temps due to better air-flow, but your CPU temps will be roughly the same. Pocket book would have more air flow as well..

On the cooler side the Noctua usually beats out the h80 also. Though the price is fairely similar, not like the hyper 212 vs. h60. I also don't view the corsair solutions as silent imo as they use somewhat loud high air pressure fans. If you want to be really quiet you're going to get something like the Gentle-Typhoon AP-15's though that's going to increase your costs.

So unless you're talking custom loops I would not rank water > air as a general rule.

@MA16V3 It's not just about CFM of the fans connected to it. Although it's true water has a greater thermal conductivity then air the water loop is still using air to remove heat from the radiator. Plus the radiators on these all in one water set ups are usually of lesser quality then say a custom loop. Where as the hyper212, the noctua, or the silver arrow use very large set ups to help dissipate heat.

@Corrupted I'm not sure what water or air coolers you're comparing but grade for grade the air cooler is always going to have a lower idle temp then a water loop. This doesn't mean the air cooler is definitively better it just means the water loop lets all the liquid heat up to a certain temperature before the radiator starts optimally dumping its heat off, you start noticing differences on load temperatures though especially if using a custom loop or something with bigger then 120mm radiator.

I also think it's worth noting pumps can break so be careful with them and they're another potential area where noise can creep into the system.

But if you have a window on the side of your computer it's hard to deny how bad-ass a water loop looks.

Didn't like the noise that my stock AMD cooler was putting out in my HTPC, so I replaced it with this guy:

Not a gaming cooler, LOL, but for $7, it does the trick! Athlon x3 @ 3.6Ghz is sitting at 21C stock and 47C load. Pretty dope!
