Sony to bring Cloud Storage to the PS3
That is a nice option to have...
http://kotaku.com/5746393/save-your-...es-in-thin-airKotaku has learned that earlier today, Sony informed developers of a new feature for the PlayStation 3: the ability to save games in the "cloud".
Cloud storage means that, rather than just keeping your save game data on your PlayStation 3's hard drive, users will be given the option to upload their saves remotely to a server. The advantage of this is that not only does it save the user space on their hard drive, but since it's tied to a PlayStation Network account, it can be pulled down to different consoles whenever and wherever the user desires.
First rumoured all the way back in 2009, there is of course a catch: it'll only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, not the great unwashed. Actually, there are two catches: Sony bundled the announcement with the clause that, because saving games to the cloud "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage", developers are able to opt out and bar their games from using it should there be a concern.
Sony will call the process "Online Saving", and it'll be made available as part of the PS3's upcoming 3.60 firmware update. We've contacted the company for further information, and will update if we hear back. -

Glad it's coming, hopefully this pushes MS to make it available to gold members as well. Even though i'll probably never use it on either platform. It's nice to have the option.

pretty cool, but i hope all developers support it like dead space 2 being about to find a dead space game save on it.
what happens when the internet connection is down, does it keep a local synced copy as well? -

The best thing about this, as Ben pointed out last night, is that it could be a solution to the issues of saves not transfering to a new console, or even possibly using saves on a friend's console.

This would be especially helpful for those of us with two consoles if unlocked saves were allowed. Wouldn't have to transfer game saves whenever I switch coasts

If you can share saves, what does that mean for trophies and such? Couldn't you just download a save from someone and "oh cool, I just got platinum on that game in 10 seconds!"
What about hacked saves? What if you unknowingly share someones hacked save...are you going to get banned from PSN for something you had no idea about? -

Wonder if this will help with issues of corrupted saves.

The 360 already has it on some of their games. Alan Wake and Halo: Reach both have Cloud Saves.
The feature is really useful if you have HDD failures or any other reason why your save might get corrupted. You won't use it all the time, but having it available and in the background is a nice safety net.
My friend had gotten one of the new 360 slims. The HDD crapped out after like 2 or so weeks. He lost all his saves. When he got a new unit, he loaded up Reach and Alan Wake and both games remembered his progress. So, he got his data back on both titles. They were the only ones.
ME2 he wasn't so lucky on. -

So, if you use this feature as a "Plus" member, what happens if you quit Plus?
