The most important thing here, is that if this is possible on a smartphone, how frickin' awesome is the real deal going to be on cutting edge hardware. The one thing about Carmack, his engines are ALWAYS stable, and ALWAYS optimized. I can't wait!

In the meantime, some of us are eager to see what Doom 4 will bring to the franchise. What we know is that the game will be locked at 30fps to incorporate a higher visual quality--three times that of Rage. It will also supposedly leverage some of the Quake Live infrastructure for its multiplayer component. Carmack also reassured fans that Doom 4 shouldn't take as long to ship as Rage.
"It's already in the pipeline and we feel good about it," he said.Intel i5 2500k (@4.7Ghz) + XFX Radeon 7970 3GB RAM! + 16GB DDR3 RAM (STEAM/Origin: Nealon_Greene)

That is something I never quite understood. What is the reason for hard-locking games to a certain frame count? Are there any benefits to that?

Not that surprising, PSP was close to PS2 graphics and it is 5 1/2 years old.
Waiting for the day when sales or graphics or reviews matter again. -

Except not all phones are that optimized and have a GPU.
I think...that the 3g and 3gs have a GPU on top of their processor but the new Apple A4 does everything.
Take the Motorola droid phones, they have a GPU, but the HTC Evo and Incredible do not.
But of course it's not the sort of GPU on from a PC, but anyways, there's all sorts of weird differentiation.
And I'm not even sure if anyone knows what the Iphone is clocked at. It might be open knowledge that the A4 in the Ipad is clocked at 1GHZ but nobody knows if it isn't downclocked for battery conservation on the Iphone. I mean, it's the same processor with a smaller battery, but I'm not sure if the smaller screen would make up the power difference.PSN: AverryXC

Rage and Doom 4 look stunning. You guys are gonna love it. And Favelle, Carmack is a genius and has very high expectations for future tech.

Thats true, but you must also take into consideration that the respective phones Froyo updates has tons of hardware optimizations. I have an EVO 4G and Linpacks TFLOP benchmark has jumped from 7 - 8 (2.1) to mid/high 30s in 2.2.
The performance differences can be seen in the 3D benchmark NeoCore as well. The optimizations made a huge difference, even without a GPU. The PSX emu runs extremely well on the EVO 4G as a testament to this. Prior to Froyo, it chugged, and pretty much ran like shit.
Now add in custom ROMs with further optimizations to the CPU source, custom kernals, etc. and you can squeeze even more performance out of it without sacrificing battery life, and even extent it.
But as for Rage, thats crazy he squeezed 60fps out of the iPhone. While it has extremely good battery life, how will Rage affect it? Im sure John (lmao) er... Mr Carmack will optimize that as well if he hasnt already.

The snapdragon chips are obviously made to work just fine without a GPU. Is the Evo still locked to 30 fps in its 2.2 update? I'm excited to see what Froyo does to my Incredible.
