holy shit... so even the HDs are the same but MS charges you 150 to 200% mark up for a formatting the HD for you?

i understand they order drives from other manufacturers, but not purchasing a MS OEM drive circumvents their accessory licensing process. it would be quite easy for them to compare drive serial numbers. just not a risk i'm comfortable with. wasn't all the MW2 hacking done via modified HDD's?

Yes, basically, plus the cable. But that's just a proprietary USB cable, so even that should be only $2-3. Also, it's more than just 200%, it's more like ~430% since they're charging you $130 for a $30 HD.

It's not exactly the same thing. They can't ban serial numbers of the same manufacture they buy their HD's from. An OEM drive is an OEM drive. They SD cards they were banning were from a non-MS manufacturer, which is why they were able to disable them.
If you're afraid of losing saves, you can always back them up to an MS memory card, and then do the transfer and then copy them back when you're done. Either way, people have been doing this for quite awhile without a problem. The nerd is a tirelessly predictable creature whom the promise of boobies is like a bacon sandwich to a starving wolf. - Yahtzee

They probably do, just not on this particular one. MS cleverly went and made every part J6P friendly and charge you for it, which is fine for some, but annoying for others.
Nintendo charges $60 for that proprietary component cable of theirs. Plus theirs all the add on crap like Motion+.
Sony is actually pretty good about allowing others to produce stuff for their console which lowers costs. You don't have to buy proprietary HDMI cables, USB cables, etc.The nerd is a tirelessly predictable creature whom the promise of boobies is like a bacon sandwich to a starving wolf. - Yahtzee

i don't see why MS couldn't ban drive serial numbers, as they are all unique.
the SD card thing is certainly different but similar in the aspect that people are using accessories that MS didn't fully profit from. i highly doubt MS is comfortable with users bypassing retail accessory pricing. -

I don't believe they have anyway of tracking hardware serial numbers without their being a way for the console to somehow query the ID of the HDD. Not even PC's do this, and at best it simply does the model number. Which is precisely why you have to use the same model they use.
The only case where they don't do this is MAC ID's of the wireless devices, and even then, it's not as if you make your own they are going to start banning MAC ID's that aren't registered to MS right? The nerd is a tirelessly predictable creature whom the promise of boobies is like a bacon sandwich to a starving wolf. - Yahtzee

a simple VBscript can retrieve the HDD serial. it would be trivial for MS to pull this data if they chose.
aye, they could ban non MS OEM wireless nics if they wanted to, in this manner of unique device id's. -
