null point for me, HD streaming quality is poop in comparison, even out of convenience.

however, it's free so other people can certainly use it.

in regards to the installation disc:

"To enable the Netflix service, which will cost $8.99 a month, PS3 owners will initially need to insert an instant streaming Blu-ray disc that will be shipped out free of charge. The disc "leverages Blu-ray's BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet." To reserve your disc, head over the Netflix's website."

Very good! Now I have a third set to stream Netflix on. For $8.99, and the ability to view Netflix on my 360, PS3 and my Mac it's such a great deal.

Thanks, Netflix!

A definite blow to Microsoft's strategic offerings.

LOL at a disc required to access streaming movies. That makes no sense at all.

Agreed, I used it once and was not impressed at all. I will stick to Blu.

I agree, I have Netflix & find myself streaming some movies on my PC. Now that it will be on the PS3, it's even better.

Nothing I would assume. That is a per-title pricing service and Netflix is a subscription service. Not everyone wants to set up another monthly bill.

I imagine the disc needed for setup is for security reasons. With MS limiting it to users with gold that are already address verified via the gold subscription it can simply be a download. However, with the PSN accounts not having any verification like this or a tiered system they need some way to control the application. Not that this can't be hacked but probably done for legal license agreement reasons. I'm really interested to see how this works i.e. if the disc is required only for setup or if the disc is needed each time the app is loaded(I'd assume the former). Also of interest is whether the disc is a one shot deal per system (i.e. disc has serial and serial is verified on netflixs end) or if it can be loaded into multiple systems. Great news for PS3 owners w/netflix though.

What are they smoking?
Even if this is true why do it that way.

If it is using the BD live access, instead of gaming connection, would that require the disc to be always used so that it accesses the net through BD live?

I mean it is always on line, and if you have it connected why not add one more option to the cavalcade.

I am probably missing how they actually intend to implement it. Got to be because it doesn't make senses to run it through bd live.

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii."

Interesting, if true. If it is true, then I suspect we will just have to get used to this disc idea until the dashboard exclusivity ends.

Can't say I'm hugely stoked for this, as I've been a netflix member for over 7 years and have already had netflix streaming since they've started it - and rarely use it. But, another option for free (for existing customers, of course) is always good.

would this disk also work on any BD-live enabled player since it is just a blu ray disk?
