Default PS3 Failures... had 'em?

So, we've been hearing about PS3 failures, and we've had 360 failure polls here, so why not - lets find out what the situation is. I'll try to think of everything in the poll, but you know how that generally goes.

Nope, but came close to a firmware related one mid last year. I've got a core 20GB since Dec of 06.

I bought both my 360 and PS3 at launch. My 360 died in October of 2008 and my PS3 died in February of 2009. Both were kept in an open wooden cabinet with plenty of room to breathe. I replaced my 360 with a unit with the newest chipset and haven't had a single problem(not even a freeze up) with it yet. I switched over to a standalone Pioneer Blu-ray player for 6 months but I just bought a PS3 Slim yesterday and I've been very happy with it thus far. So I'm on my 2nd of both consoles.

80g PS3 BC Motorstorm bundle. Disc drive failure. Did not send in for repair, so I don't know the exact specifics of what went wrong with it. Still boots up fine, plays anything and everything off the HDD fine, still goes online...everything works fine until you put a disc in, and then nothing.

Solution: Bought a replacement. Selling gimped one on Ebay.

Had a hiccup with a firmware update, but otherwise no problems with my launch PS3.

My poor 60gb went YLOD when I put in KZ2 for the first time. Top of that I thought I would be able to swap out HD's from one PS3 to another with no problem, didn't work and I lost all my saves (thank god I normally either finish a game completely or barely start it, no 1/2 point saves lost).

I have a question and would appreciate if anyone here might know the answer. How does the rule of installing a PSN game on up to 5 other systems work? If I dl'ed a PSN game on my PS3, but then had to exchange that PS3 for a new one because of YLOD does installing the PSN game again on the new PS3 count as an install on another system? Does switching out HD's and reinstalling everything on the new HD come out of my 5 installs?

Basically, is the 5 limit install tied strictly to new hardware or is it the PSN account I'm doing it from? I gotta admit, that part confuses me.

Tied to the psn account you used to purchase that particular game/item from.

So, if you go over to a friends house, or buy a new ps3...log in under your id, download it onto either a friends system or your new ps3, it will count against the 5.

I didn't think I would ever get close..but now with the old one dying, buying a new one...then taking it back and switching it out for a slim plus buying another slim..I/ve come close to my limit in just a few short weeks.

some stuff, though, I'm not re-downloading for that reason. there are alot of games that I may never play again. If I get the urge to play them, I'll just go back into my downloads under my id, find it and re-download it then.

No failure, but tons of janky software errors and weirdness. Lots of disconnects from PSN, cannot stream media from my PC, and my personal favorite: random lockups while playing games.

Thanks AK, but I gotta say that's pretty stupid. I think I may be at 3 or 4 on some of my older games (Sony if your going to be dicks about it, at least provide a DL ticker so I know how many I have left). Once again Steam proves to be the superior online solution.

I've had the same thing in my brief experience with my 360. Hell in shadow complex I had 3 lockups, and I fell through the world once, in 6 hours vs Fallout 3 I had 2 lockups in 70 hours of playtime.

Although I don't have streamign issues with either system the PS3 is just hooked up my my receiver so I don't use my 360 for that.

I have had the opposite experience. The only issues I've ever had with my 360 were during Lost Odyssey. The game locked up twice during the 8 or so hours I played it. I didn't like the game so I gave it back to my friend. Haven't had any issue with my machine since. No errors, freezing, overheating, etc. I use it to stream music to my living room several days a week, play lots of games on it, Netflix, etc. and it runs just fine.

*shrug*

Shadow Complex is messed up though. I locked myself out of finishing the game last weekend and somehow got to a spot where I couldn't get back to the area I needed to move the story forward. Had to restart my game last night.

I haven't had a hardware problem with my PS3 but I did mess up trying to swap the HDD and Sony replaced the entire unit for me by courier the next day even though it was my fault.

Which was nice.
