Given that that statement was made when the console was less than a year old (less than half a year in EU), it's probable that it was accurate at the time. Now, probably not so much, though I wouldn't care to guess at a figure.

You yourself had a failure, yet it's still possibly less then one percent.

Don't play the lottery, because your luck stinks.

It was possibly premature, if not arrogant, for Sony to make such a statement so soon after launch.

Good point.

No less arrogant than to claim that failure rates were within industry norms for 18 months before bowing to consumer pressure and the threat of an EU investigation and extending the warranty amidst reports of failure rates around 33% (now of course we know they are currently around 54% and were probably much higher at the time) and yet still no word from MS directly about the rate of failure.

Silly buggers.

Yes, exactly.

I don't take my own experience as proof of the overall pattern, as that would be logically wrong.

To any of you who had a bd drive fail and its out of warranty. That is an incredibly easy fix. You can get the drive off ebay and swap it really easy. Its literally like one cable to connect it. I suggest you all just do that rather than sell it and not get good money for it. I have a pdf that tells you how to change it. PM me if you guys decide to go that rout

You know..I was going to do that. I actually kept it around for that very fact. I watched a few youtube videos, took it completely apart and saw how easy it is to do it. Few reasons why - I had a hard time finding blu ray drives on ebay during the few days I was motivated to fix it. 2 - it's fucking loud. Even after sucking every bit of dust possible out of the machine with it fully exposed, putting it back together and playing nothing but psn titles off the hdd, it was fucking loud. So I figure that its probably on borrowed time anyways. In the meantime, I had picked up a non-bc fat..and realized that I didn't miss the extra ports, the bc and card readers etc...and that it ran much cooler and quieter.

I believe its on Ebay right now (I asked my girl to list it, but didn't think about asking her when I got home if she did or not)...If you want it, and want to repair it and either re-sell it or keep it..I'll work out some sort of deal with you.

Don't have a PS3, I just like voting, makes me feel important

Although seriously if they put some kind of BC for ps2 I consider one.

Truly YOLD or RROD wouldn't keep me from buying either machine.

Oh, if it matters the Xboxes we bought for xmas gifts last years are running fine, but then they were the new chipsets and what not
